Improving Women’s Rights in Developing Countries through Educational ODA in the Post-COVID-19 Era

(Purpose) The aim of this study is to examine the various types of impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on women’s rights in developing countries, and to explore directions for solving this problem from the perspective of educational ODA.
(Design/methodology/approach) To this end, a news portal dealing with Korean newspaper articles was visited, and text-mining analysis applied to these newspaper articles by extracting only those containing major keywords from newspaper articles published across the country.
(Findings) The analysis showed that, although the disaster situation caused by COVID-19 has had various effects, the types of damage suffered by women in developing countries are diverse and extensive. As a result of the text-mining analysis, all the characteristics of the correlation between COVID-19 and women’s rights were compressed into seven topics, namely: ‘The impact of COVID-19 on the world economy and women’; ‘The importance of supporting children online in international co-operation’; ‘The need to support Asian cities such as the Philippines’; ‘The crisis facing women due to COVID-19 and the possibility of damage’; ‘The need for Korea to provide educational support for development in Africa’; ‘The role of education in economic crisis’; and ‘Crisis issues facing women and young people seen from an international perspective’.
(Research implications or Originality) In order to solve these problems in developing countries, aid-sharing countries should adopt educational ODA programmes as policy tools. In particular, they are required to take more evidence-based information and knowledge in making decisions about the ODA projects from the first stage. It is hoped that more ODA projects supporting the women’s right and protection should be developed and implementd in developing countries so that the women in those countries could enjoy more freedom and right in the Post-Covid 19 era.
