조선후기 풍속화의 農繁期 들밥(饁)과 술(酒) (Deulbap and Drinks of the Busy Farming Season Portrayed in the Genre Paintings of Late Joseon)

초록

조선후기 풍속화에 나타난 농번기 음식과 관련된 행위의 이미지, 즉 봄에 논밭을 갈고 여름에 김매고 가을에 추수하는 장면 속의 들밥을 내어오는 여인과 술항아리를 들고 따르는 아이, 그리고 내어온 음식을 함께 먹는 농부들의 표현은 농사의 때를 제 때에 맞추어 부지런히 일함의 상징이었다. 尹斗緖, 鄭敾, 趙榮祏, 金 斗樑․金德夏, 金弘道, 金得臣, 劉淑, 李昉運 등이 남긴 田野風俗像은 화본이나 상상속의 모습이 아닌 살아 숨 쉬는 사실의 진정성이었다. 들판의 始終 광경을 그림으로 잘 나타내어 勸農目的의 의미를 함축하고 있다. 農家의 풍정을 통해 ‘태평성대’를 표상하는 조선의 통치 이념인 四季의 秩序, 生産, 無逸精神에 토대를 두고있는 爲民的 성격의 예술의 표출로 검토된다.
또한, 농번기 노동에 제공된 들밥과 술은 수고한 농부들의 배고픔과 갈증을해소시켜주는 勸農振作의 慰勞飮食이었다. ‘밥’은 모든 음식의 대명사였으며, 반찬은 그 철에 맞는 맛을 많게 하여 기운을 기른 것으로 보인다. 특히, 술은 조선시대 酒禁啓導의 과정 중에서도 권농정책의 일환으로 농번기 힘든 일을 하는 농부들에게 허용되었고, 이는 금주계도 속의 얼핏 모순되어 보이지만 국가를 운영하는데 있어 중요한 측면으로 작용하였다.
그러나 본고에서의 음식과 관련된 행위의 모티프가 화면 전체에서 차지하는위치와 의미 규명, 그리고 그 가운데에서의 음식에 대한 검토가 완전하다고는 생각하지 않는다. 그럼에도 회화 작품의 표층적인 이해가 아닌 한 시대의 문화풍조와 시대상의 일면을 읽어낼 수 있는 심층적 분석의 기반으로서, 시각문화론적 측면에서의 의미를 찾을 수 있도록 접근하였다.

영어초록

Images related with the farmers eating in the field during the busy farming season captured by genre painters of late Joseon, such as those of women carrying deulbap followed by their children carrying wine pots, and farmers eating the food brought to them in the paintings capturing the farmers busy in the field tilling soil in spring, weeding in summer, and harvesting in autumn symbolized diligence and hard work of the Korean farming communities. The "Scenes of Folk Customs in the Field" (田野風俗像) captured by great painters of late Joseon such as Yun Du-seo, Jeong Seon, Jo Yeong-seok, Kim Du-ryang, Kim Deok-ha, Kim Hong-do, Kim Deuk-sin, Yu Suk, and Yi Bang-un are characterized by "real scenery," not certain imaginary landscapes inherited through generations from old masters, that capture truthful fragments of real lives of common people. Their genre paintings depicting the farmers in the field were largely produced to boost agricultural productivity. The paintings took the scenes of idyllic rural life to represent a peaceful reign, performing their function as works of art to express the governance for the welfare of people on the basis of the ideology that valued the order of the four seasons, bounty of nature, and diligence.
The deulbap and drinks offered to the farmers working hard in the field during the busy farming season were then intended to comfort the farmers by easing their hunger pangs and quenching their thirst and promote the importance of farming. For Korean farmers, the cooked rice the call Bap represented all the food they eat to survive while the side dishes, largely made of seasonal products, symbolized the energy they received from nature.
While the Neo-Confucian ruling elites of Joseon emphasized the harm of consuming alcohol, they allowed farmers toiling in the field to drink alcoholic beverages as an effort to boost agricultural production.
My discussion in this study about the motives of the activities related with food depicted in the genre paintings, and the significance of eating in the farming field may not be persuasive enough. My approach in this study is to focus on the significance of the genre paintings in connection with visual culture and contribute to laying a foundation for in-depth analyses leading not to shallow understanding on the paintings but to a more comprehensive understanding of the sociocultural aspects of the era when the paintings were produced.
