Does the Perception of the US Affect Asians’ Attitudes Toward Chinese Investments? An Empirical Analysis Using Survey Data

초록

Do Asians think FDI from China benefits their home country’s economy, or do they believe FDI inflows from China have negative impacts? Do individuals’ perceptions of the US affect their attitudes toward Chinese investments in their home country? This article intends to investigate whether individuals who positively perceive the US would view FDI from China as harmful to their country, using survey data and statistical analysis. The results of empirical analysis show that, in five Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and South Korea), respondents who have positive attitudes toward the US were less likely to view Chinese investments as something good to their country. Specifically, those who think their country should maintain strong economic ties with the US than China were more likely to have negative attitudes toward Chinese investments. The finding suggests that geopolitical conditions surrounding their home country affect the public’s attitudes toward investments from a certain country. The finding also implies that, as strategic competition and rivalry between the US and China intensify, Asian countries’ governments might need to take public opinion into account – whether people have positive perceptions toward the US or China – when making decisions to accept Chinese investments. Although political and business leaders might think Chinese investments will be beneficial to the country and their firms, Asian countries might need to make political decisions not to accept Chinese investments due to negative sentiments among the public.
