작품의 의미와 의도주의-반의도주의 논쟁 (Work's Meaning and Author's Intention: Intentionalism vs. Anti-intentionalism)

초록

필자는 이 논문에서 작가의 실제 의도가 작품의 의미를 결정한다는 의도주의에 비판적인 논의를 제공한다. 의미의 자의적 결정은 의도주의의 치명적 약점이다. 따라서 의도주의는 ‘온건한 실제의도주의’와 같은 절충적 이론으로 전개되고 있는 것이 추세이다. 하지만 필자는 이들 이론이 해석에서 실제 의도에 의존해야 할 결정적인 동기를 제시하는 데 실패하고 있다는 점을 지적한다. 또한 이들이 내세우는 절충이 결국은 의도주의의 원칙에 대한 훼손을 함축하는 것이므로 이름에 걸맞지 않는 부정합적인 입장이라는 점도 보인다. 이어서 필자는 최근 대두된 현대 조형예술을 이용한 의도주의의 옹호 전략도 소개한 후 비판한다. 그런데 이러한 논의를 통해 드러나는 것 중 하나가 작품에 대한 일차적 혹은 범주적 의도와 의미론적 의도의 구분인데, 전자는 작품의 존재론적 성격과 관련된 것으로 반의도주의도 어느 정도 수용할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 따라서 현대 예술 작품 중에 ‘작가의 의도를 고려해 해석되는 작품’이라는 범주적 의도를 가진 것이 있다면 예외적으로 이를 존중하는 것이 가능하다. 필자는 이것이 온건한 실제 의도주의가 목표로 하였으나 자신들의 이론 속에 정합적으로 제시하지 못한 절충을 보다 적절하게 달성하는 하나의 가능성이 될 수 있다고 본다.

영어초록

Dealing with the debate concerning the proper role of an author’s intention in the interpretation of her work, this paper goes against intentionalism, the position which maintains that intention is essential for determining the meaning of the work. Since it is well agreed upon that ‘Humpty-Dumpty-ism,’ which is a consequence of radical intentionalism, should be avoided, contemporary intentionalism has evolved into a ‘moderate actual intentionalism,’ a kind of compromised theory. However, even in this move, any particularly persuasive explanation of the motivation for why we should consider actual intention at all has not been given yet. Furthermore, I believe the compromise undermines the fundamental of intentionalism. What the moderate theory amounts to is not really a version of intentionalism. I also discuss a new argument for the actual intentionalism by Maes using the case in contemporary plastic art. I do not find anything favorable for intentionalism here either.
On my way to argue this point, the distinction between the categorical intention and the semantic intention comes up. The categorical intention is the one that relates to the ontological status of the work, and for that reason, it is possible that even anti-intentionalists can accept the role of it without being incoherent. And in contemporary art, a certain work possibly has a categorical intention such that the intention of the author has to be considered. Such intention could be considered as constituting an ontological part of the work. So, if a work belongs to this particular category which requires the consideration of author’s intention as an essential point to start the semantic interpretation of the work, then even anti-intentionalists can be justified to consider the intention for determining a work’s meaning. This would be my suggestion for the proper compromise between the basic anti-intentionalistic principle and the so called intentionalistic intuition that is seemingly hard to ignore in some cases.
