초록

이 논문은 일제강점기 이왕직 관료로 활동한 朴冑彬(1882~1931)이라는 인물에 주목하여 서화감상과 후원의 場으로서 이왕직의 기능과 일제강점기 다양한 사회적 위치에 있던 인물들의 서화교류가 갖는 미술 사적 의미를 파악하는데 목적이 있다.
박주빈은 궁내부와 이왕직을 거치며 30년 가까이 李王家 왕족들을 가까이서 보좌하면서 왕실 禮式을 전문적으로 담당했던 관료이다. 그는 서화에 관심이 많아 관직 생활을 시작한 1910년대부터 세상을 떠나기 일 년전인 1930년까지 자신과 교분을 나눈 정치가, 학자, 서화가 60명으로부터 작품을 수집하여 《書牕淸供》이라는 서화첩을 완성하였다. 이 帖에 작품이 수록된 대부분의 인물들이 그와 관직생활을 함께한 관료들이자 정치와 학계를 아우른 명사들이었다는 점에서 박주빈의 높은 人望과 사회적 위상을 유추할 수 있다. 특히 《書牕淸供》에 수록된 그림의 경우 서화미술회, 서화협회 소속 화가들의 작품 위주로 구성된 것에 대해 순종과 영친왕이 이왕직을 통해 두 단체 화가들을 후원하고 있었고 이들이 왕실 소용 그림의 한 축을 담당하고 있었기 때문에 박주빈이 관련 화가들의 작품을 중점적으로 수집하게 된 배경이 되었을 것으로 생각한다.
《書牕淸供》은 박주빈이 직접 교유한 당대 주요 인물들의 서화작품을 수집한 것으로, 20세기 초 서화가들의 활동상과 이들의 작품을 감상하고 수집한 향유층의 일면을 알려주는 자료이다. 따라서 당시 미술계의 흐름을 일별하고 근대 서화가들에 대한 당대인의 인식을 체계적으로 알 수 있는 자료가 부족한 상황에서, 이 帖에 수록된 작가와 작품들을 통해 1910~1930년대 서화계를 주도한 작가들, 종합정리가 미진했던 관료출신 작가들의 명단과 작품을 확인할 수 있다는 점은 이 서화첩이 지닌 중요한 의의라고 하겠다. 아울러 전통적 소재와 표현을 선호한 이왕가 또는 관료층 인사들의 보수적인 취향이 반영된 결과물로 생각되며, 이러한 측면에서 박주빈은 근대 왕실미술과 후원의 계승, 서화계에 끼친 관료들의 역할, 수집과 감상에 있어 전통과 혁신이 교차하던 시대적 전환기에서 활동한 수장가의 면모를 복합적으로 보여준 인물이었다고 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

Paying scholarly attention to Park Ju-bin (朴胄彬, 1882~1931), who has served Yiwangjik (王李職) or the Office of the Yi Royal Family, this essay examines how the Office facilitated appreciations of, and patronage for, painting and calligraphy; and seeks to understand the arthistorical significances of cultural exchanges that distinguished individuals of different social standings carried out with painting and calligraphy in the Japanese colonial period.
In technical charge of royal rituals and ceremonies, Park Ju-bin has closely served the Yi Royal Family members for nearly thirty years from various posts of Gungnaebu (宮內府, Council of the Royal Household) and later Yiwangjik. Deeply interested in painting and calligraphy, Park produced an album of the ink-brush arts under the title Seochang cheonggong (書牕淸供). The compilation album (translatable as “Panoply of Pure Collectibles along Window of a Scholar’s Study”) is based on what Park has collected from a total of sixty eminent individuals – including politicians, scholars, and professional artists – with whom he has established contact for the duration of his public service (1910~1930). They consist mostly of Park’s fellow officials or renowned figures from political and academic spheres, the membership suggesting Park’s high reputation and social status. In particular, the paintings in the album were primarily by artists affiliated to Seohwa misulhoe (書畫美術會, Painting and Calligraphic Art Association) or Seohwa hyeopoe (書畫協會, Society of Painting and Calligraphy). Probably Park has prioritized to collect works by members of the prestigious art organizations: for example, the painters of the Association and the Society enjoyed royal patronage of Yiwangjik—by the will of King Sunjong (純宗, 1874~1926; r. 1907~1910) and his brother Yeongchinwang (英親王, 1897~1970)—and constituted the mainstays of art productions for the royal house.
Comprised of paintings and calligraphy by Park’s associates of social importance, the Seochang cheonggong provides a glimpse into the breadth of the artists’ activities of the early twentieth century as well as into an enthusiastic audience who admired and collected their artworks. Given the scanty of materials offering a general view on the art world of the period nor a wide command over contemporary public perception of modern artists, the album Seochang holds a profound significance since the involved artists include not only those who exercised a leadership in the community of painters and calligraphers of the time but also those of bureaucratic origin whose artistic careers await further synthetic studies. The album discloses a preference for traditional subjects and conventional styles: perhaps the conservatism to likings of Royal households or of high-ranking officials. These various traits of this album combine to show that Park represents the art collectors dealing with a complexity of issues such as the continuation of the royal art and patronage, the roles of bureaucrats in art, and art appreciations and collections over the transitional
