냉전과 근대화의 스펙터클한 유람 그리고 지워진 폭력의 민낯-영화 <팔도강산> 시리즈를 중심으로- (Spectacular Excursions of the Cold War and Modernization and the Erased Naked Faces of Violence -With a focus on the Paldogangsan series-)

초록

이 글에서는 1960년대 중후반부터 1970년대 초반까지 제작⋅상영된 영화 <팔도강산> 시리즈를 냉전 인식과 대중성의 차원에서 새롭게 분석하고자 했다. 특히 대중성과 냉전 인식을 반영한 이 영화 시리즈는 완벽하게 구축된 이데올로기적 세계를 보여 줌으로써 역설적으로 배제된 폭력의 흔적들을 짐작케 하는 측면이 보인다고 판단했다. 이를 살펴보기 위해 첫째, 영화에 재현된 전통과 역사의 영역을 노부부로 대표되는 구세대의 전유물로 상징화하는 한편에 근대화의 치적을 신세대의 것으로 전유함으로써 근대화의 성과에 견주어 구세대의 가치가 뒷전으로 밀려나는 배제의 상황을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 북을 정복해야 할 영토로 상정함으로써 남한의 근대화와 반공주의의 강력한 이데올로기를 정권이 생산하고자 한 대중들에게 주입하고 그들을 통일의 주체로 정립하고자 한다. 둘째, 이 영화 시리즈는 전 국토를 산업화의 박람회장으로 재현함으로써 노동 자체를 삭제하는 측면을 보여 준다. 산업 현장을 근대화의 스펙터클은 보여 주기 위해 완벽하게 구조화되어 있기 때문에 영화에 재현된 노동자조차 근대화의 스펙터클을 위한 중요한 요소로서의 의미만을 가질 뿐이다. 셋째, 대중들의 성공 신화를 통한 냉전 체제의 구축과 근대화를 위해 이 영화 시리즈에는 성공하지 못한 못난 자들의 눈물을 적극 재현함으로써 그들의 좌절 경험을 영화 속 영웅 인물의 구원을 통해 이야기하고 당대의 사회 구조적 문제에 눈감고 성공과 좌절을 개인의 노력과 영웅적 구원 속에서 사사화하는 문제를 노출한다.

영어초록

This study set out to provide new analyses of the Paldogangsan series, which was produced and played from the middle and late 1960s to the early 1970s, in the aspects of the awareness of the Cold War and popularity. Reflecting popularity and the awareness of the Cold War, this movie series showed an ideological world that was built perfectly and thus helped the audience estimate the excluded traces of violence in a paradoxical manner. The study first symbolized the areas of tradition and history reproduced in the movies as the exclusive property of the old generation represented by the old couples and presented the achievements of modernization as the exclusive possession of the new generation, thus checking the situation in which the values of the old generation were pushed behind the achievements of modernization. The series also introduced North Korea as the land that South Korea should conquer, instilling South Korea’s powerful ideology of modernization and anti-communism into the people that the regime tried to produce and establishing them as the subject of unification. Secondly, this series reproduced the entire territory of the nation as the exhibition venue of industrialization, showing the aspect of deleting labor itself. Since the industrial fields were perfectly structured to show the spectacles of modernization, even the workers reproduced in the movies held their meanings only as important elements of spectacles in modernization. Finally, the series was produced to establish the Cold War system and promote modernization through the success stories of people. By reproducing the tears of losers that did not make it actively, it revealed its problems such as talking about their frustration experiences through the salvation of heroic characters in the movies, turning its back on the problems with the social structure of the times, and making success and frustration private in individuals’ efforts and heroic salvation.
