하층민 체험에 기초한 사회주의 서사의 성취와 한계: 강경애 『인간문제』 (The Achievements and Limitations of the Socialist Narrative Based on the Experience of the Lower Classes: Kang, Kyeong-ae『Human Problem』)

초록

이 글은 식민지 시기 최고의 리얼리즘 소설 중 하나로 평가되는 강경애 장편소설 『인간문제』를 대상으로 작품에서 강조된 ‘체험’을 중심으로 작품의 성과와 한계를 살펴보고자 했다. 사회주의 이념을 기초로 작품을 창작하면서도 동시기 사회주의 작품들과 구별되는 강경애 소설의 특징적 요소인 하층민 체험에 초점을 맞추어 자본주의 사회의 보편적 인간문제인 하층민 문제를 어떻게 접근하고 해결하는지를 알아보았다. 그동안 『인간문제』에 대한 읽기는 사회주의 이념에 동의한 리얼리즘의 방법론을 통해 이루어졌으나 교양교육의 고전읽기를 위해 특정 이념의 시각보다 작품에 강조된 고유한 주제나 미학적 특징에 주목하여 작품을 읽고자 하였으며 내재적 방법으로 읽음으로써 작품의 의미는 물론 성과와 한계가 폭넓게 드러날 수 있었다.
하층민 체험을 중심으로 『인간문제』를 읽게 될 때 작품은 농촌과 도시를 중심으로 하층민 소작농이 지주와 자본가로부터 받는 부당한 억압과 고통을 그리고 있다. 노동에 대한 정당한 보상을 빼앗기고 인간다운 존엄과 생활을 누리지 못하는 하층민의 현실이 그들의 체험을 통해 절실하게 제시된다. 노동 체험은 이들이 향후 현실 변혁의 주체로 성장할 수 있는 필연적 계기로 작용함으로써 노동은 하층민 문제해결을 위한 핵심적 요인으로 강조된다. 사회주의 이념을 이론적으로 수용한 지식인은 노동 체험 밖에 위치하고 있어 진정한 사회운동의 주체가 될 수 없다고 배척된다. 그런데 하층민의 노동이 유일한 특권적 가치로 개념화됨으로써 노동 내부의 이질적 모순이 부차화하거나 억압된다. 여성의 가사 노동이 당연한 여성의 임무로 미화되고 고등교육을 받은 신여성이 사치와 방탕의 아이콘으로 육체의 이미지를 통해 재현됨으로써 남성중심적 시각과 비판적 거리를 확보하지 못하고 있음을 보여준다. 사회주의 이념을 통한 진보적 열망과 보수적인 여성의식이 모순적으로 공존하고 있음을 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This article is aimed at reading the novel 『Human Problem』, which is recognized as the best realist novel of the colonial period, and seeks to examine the achievements and limitations of the work with a focus on the “experience”. While creating works based on socialist ideologies, which were actively embraced by colonial intellectuals as the progressive ideology of the transformation of reality, he focused on the experience of the lower classes, which is characteristic of the fiction that transforms from contemporary socialist works, and focuses on how to approach and solve the problem of the lower classes, the universal human problem of capitalist society. In the meantime, the research and achievements of 『The Human Problem』have been carried out through the methodology of socialist realism, but it is believed that the meaning of the work as well as the achievements and limitations of the work can be broadly understood by reading the work through the unique themes and aesthetic features emphasized in the work without agreeing with certain ideologies, but also as an attempt to figure out how to read the work as a classic for university liberal arts education.
From this point of view, when reading 『The Human Problem』 with a focus on the experience of the lower class, the work depicts the unjust oppression and suffering that the lower class peasants receive from their landowners and capitalists, mainly in the rural areas and cities. By emphasizing the experience of the characters and recreating the experience from their perspective, the suffering and oppression of the lower classes are realistically revealed. The contradiction of underclass' inability to enjoy human dignity and life by exploiting the price of their labour by landowners and capitalists is represented in this process. The experience of the work of the lower classes serves as an inevitable occasion for them to grow into agents of future real transformation, so that in the work labor is presented as the only way to solve the problems of the lower classes. Therefore, the intellectual, who is a theoretical warrior who accepts and educates socialist ideology, is located outside of the experience of work and is not recognized as the main body of social movement. Thus the privileged conception of labour as a homogeneous concept leads to the secondary or suppression of disparate contradictions within. The beautification of women's work as a woman's natural task and the reproduction of highly educated new women through images of the body as icons of luxury and debauchery fail to secure critical distance from the male-centered perspectives that internalize discrimination against women. Progressive transformation through socialist ideology and conservative consciousness coexists in contradictions.
