초록

사상 초유의 COVID-19 팬데믹(pandemic) 사태가 대한민국을 위시하여 전 지구촌에 죽음에 대한 두려움을 몰고 왔다. 그동안 인류 역사는 질병의 원인을 밝혀내고 치료함으로 생명 연장을 이룩한 경이로운 여정이었는데, COVID-19 사태로 인해 인간이 죽음이라는 절대적 한계에 직면한 유한한 존재임을 재차 실감하게 된 것이다. 지난 2년간 글로벌 팬데믹 시대에 돌입하면서 죽음에 대한 불안이 사람들의 폐부 깊숙이 각인됨으로써, 생전에 죽음을 성찰하고 준비해야 한다는 공감대가 확산하고 있다. 그동안 삶과 죽음(生死)을 둘러싼 우리 사회의 기류가 변화의 조짐을 보여왔는데, COVID-19 사태가 결정적 분기점이 되어 죽음을 공론화해야 한다는 목소리가 강한 설득력을 얻고 있다.
그러나 이러한 시대 분위기와 달리, 한국 교계와 신학계에서는 삶과 죽음을 성찰하는 생사학 및 생사교육에 대한 문제의식조차 제기되지 않는 현실이다. 우리나라에는 무수히 많은 신학대학이 있지만, 죽음을 앞둔 임종자를 위한 영적 돌봄을 가르치는 강좌나 사역 프로그램이 개설된 곳이 거의 전무하다. 설사 신학수업의 교과과정에 죽음에 관한 강좌가 있다고 해도 주로 예전적 측면에서 장례식 집례에 대한 전문지식을 제공하는 일에 치우친 경우가 많고, 죽음의 실체가 과연 무엇인지, 죽음을 앞둔 이를 어떻게 영적으로 돌봐야 하는지, 특히 죽음 앞에서 불안해하는 임종자가 복된 죽음을 맞이할 수 있도록 어떻게 준비시켜야 하는지에 대해 강의하는 교과목이 개설된 적이 없다.
그렇지 않아도 오늘날 목회자는 임종과 죽음에 대해 아무 것도 모른 채 목회자가 되는 경우가 대부분이다. 이로 인해 많은 목회자는 죽음을 앞둔 환자와 그 가족에 대한 영적인 돌봄은 물론, 성도들에게 그리스도인의 정체성을 지키면서 존엄하게 죽음을 맞이하는 법에 대해 가르쳐야 할 중차대한 소임을 잘 감당하지 못하고 있다. 바로 이러한 연유로 인해 한국 기독교계에서 생사학 및 생사교육이 사회의 다른 일반 공동체에서보다 훨씬 뒤처질 뿐만 아니라, 그리스도인의 죽음의 질이 타종교인이나 비종교인보다 더 열악할 것으로 우려되고 있다. 그러므로 생사교육이 긴급하게 요청되는 그룹은 목회자 및 신학자들이라 아니할 수 없다.
이러한 문제의식에서 필자는 성경에 기반하여 삶과 죽음을 논하는 기독교 생사학 및 생사교육에 천착하게 되었다. 본 논문은 글로벌 팬데믹 시대에 봉착하여 생사학 및 생사교육이 한국 사회에 정착하지 못하는 현실, 기독교 생사학 및 생사교육 정립의 필요성, 기독교 생사학 및 생사교육의 지향점인 삶의 존엄·죽음의 존엄·인간의 존엄, 기독교 생사학 및 생사교육이 감당해야 할 과제에 대해 논하고자 한다. 이를 통해 생사학 및 생사교육을 교회교육과 학교교육, 평생교육 차원에서 제도적으로 정착시킴으로써 죽음을 생애 전 과정을 통해 이루어야 할 과업으로 독려할 뿐만 아니라, 존엄한 삶-존엄한 죽음-존엄한 사회를 진작시키는 데 동기부여하고자 한다.

영어초록

The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has brought fear of death to the entire world. In the meantime, human history has been a remarkable process of prolonging life by discovering the cause of disease and treating it. However, due to the COVID-19 crisis, we have come to realize once again that humans are finite beings facing the absolute limit of death. With the advent of the global pandemic era over the past two years, there is a growing consensus that people should reflect on and prepare for death while living by feeling great anxiety about death. Until now, the atmosphere of our society surrounding life and death has shown signs of change, and the COVID-19 incident has become a decisive turning point, and the argument that death should be publicized has gained strong persuasion.
However, unlike the current atmosphere, the Korean church does not even raise awareness about life-and-death studies and life-and-death education, which reflect on life and death. Although there are many seminaries in Korea, few have offered courses or ministry programs that teach spiritual care for those who are about to die. Even if there is a course on death in the curriculum of the theology class, it is often biased toward providing specialized knowledge about funeral service from the liturgical aspect, and what is the reality of death and how to spiritually learn about the person who is about to die. There has never been a course that lectures on how to take care, especially how to prepare a dying person who is anxious before death to face a blessed death.
Even so, many pastors today become pastors without knowing anything about death. As a result, many pastors are unable to fulfill their important role of providing spiritual care for dying patients and their families, as well as teaching believers how to die with dignity while maintaining their Christian identity. For this reason, there is concern that life-and-death studies and life-and-death education in Korean Christianity will lag far behind other areas of society, and that the quality of death for Christians will be worse than those of other religions and non-religious people. Therefore, the groups urgently requesting life-and-death education are pastors and theologians.
In this problematic situation, I became proficient in Christian life-and-death studies and life-and-death education that discuss life-and-death based on the Bible. This thesis discusses the reality that life-and-death studies and life-death education cannot settle in Korean society in the face of a global pandemic, the justification for establishing Christian life-and-death studies and life-death education, and the dignity of life and death, which is the goal of Christian life-and-death studies and life-and-death education. I would like to discuss the challenges that Christian life-and-death studies and life-and-death education must face. Through this, life-and-death studies and life-and-death education are institutionally established at the level of school education and lifelong education, thereby encouraging death as a task to be accomplished throughout the life cycle, as well as promoting a dignified life - dignified death - dignified society. want to motivate.
