물에 대한 관조 : 인생에 대한 비유적 사유와 체험 (Contemplation on water : Metaphoric Thinking of Life and Experience)

초록

인생에 대한 비유적 사유와 체험을 형상화 한 한국 한문학 작품들은 중국의 문학․철학․사상을 수용하고 변용하며 문학성과 개성을 발휘하였다. 이는 크게 다음과 같이 세 가지 양상으로 구분해서 살펴볼 수 있었다.
첫째, ‘인생은 흘러가는 강물과 같다.’라는 시간성에 대한 비유적 사유와 체험은 孔子가 토로한 ‘逝者如斯夫! 不舍晝夜.’라는 탄식, 漢代 樂府 「長歌行」, 李白의 다양한 시작품을 수용하고 변용하며 활발하게 형상화되었다. 이는 시조와 판소리로도 이어지며 그 사유방식과 표현법의 보편성과 확산성을 드러내었다.
둘째, ‘인생은 한갓 물거품일 따름이다.’라는 덧없음에 대한 비유적 사유와 체험은 『金剛般若波羅密經』과 『楞嚴經』의 구절에 의거한 것으로서 한문학 작품을 통해 다양하게 형상화되었다. 고려 후기 李穡은 이러한 비유적 사유와 표현법을 매우 적극적으로 사용하였으며, 조선시대 전반에 걸쳐 祭文과 挽詩를 비롯한 한문학 작품에서도 널리 활용되었다. 이 과정에서 朱熹가 「武夷櫂歌」 三曲의 4구에서 ‘물거품 같고 바람 앞 등불 같은 우리 인생이 가련하다(泡沫風燈敢自憐)’라고 표현한 사실은 인생을 물거품에 비유한 사유방식과 표현법이 사상적 혐의에서 벗어나 보편화되는데 큰 역할을 하였다. 그리고 조선 후기 朴趾源의 「麈公塔銘」과 李德懋의 偈頌은 佛家의 사유방식을 능동적으로 재해석하고, 참신한 발상과 표현미를 더하여 뛰어난 작품성을 발휘하였다.
셋째, 세상을 살아가는 방법을 물을 통해 비유적으로 사유하고 체험하는 양상은 ‘몸으로 직접 물을 건너가는 방법’, ‘배를 안전하게 운행하는 방법’, ‘흘러가는 물의 속성을 이해하고 그에 따르는 방법’으로 세분화해서 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이 가운데 ‘몸으로 직접 물을 건너가는 방법’으로 세상을 살아가는 방법을 비유한 대표적인 작품은 朴趾源의 「一夜九渡河記」였다. 다음으로 ‘배를 안전하게 운행하는 방법’으로 세상을 살아가는 방법을 비유한 대표적인 작품은 李齊賢의 「送辛員外北上序」와 權近의 「舟翁說」이었다. 마지막으로 ‘흘러가는 물의 속성을 이해하고 그에 따르는 방법’으로 세상을 살아가는 방법을 비유한 작품 중에서는 『周易』의 坎卦에서 비롯된 ‘坎止流行’이라는 용어가 한시에서 널리 활용되었다. 한편 金錫胄의 「觀江亭記」는 흘러가는 강물의 덕성에 주목하여 세상을 살아가는 과정에서 용기와 지혜의 중요성을 강조했다.
이상의 한국 한문학 작품들은 오늘날 인터넷과 SNS(Social Network Service)를 기반으로 즉각적인 인식․반응․처리 과정에 익숙한 현대인들에게 유용한 문학적 유산이 될 수 있다. 이는 현대인들에게 인간으로서 겪을 수밖에 없는 실존적 고민 앞에서 불안감과 상념을 발산․해소하거나 수용․정화하거나 초탈하는 폭 넓은 사유의 장을 제공하고, 존재적 의미를 성찰하고 삶의 방향성을 탐색하는 계기를 마련해줄 수 있으리라 기대한다.

영어초록

As the perceptibility and the ability to think are developed, human race has strived to understand and overcome the finite condition and hardships in life constantly. Diverse views of the world and the ontological expressions established by countless religion, philosophy, cultures, arts, etc. of all ages and all countries around the world are essentially the products of such efforts. In this process, the key of the perceptibility and the ability to think that inspired the human race a lot was the metaphoric thinking. Human rare could understand and convey the difficult object or situation easily and cleary through the metaphor and came to explain even the abstract objects and phenomenon.
The representative metaphoric subject that human race has utilized to understand and overcome the finitude, transience, difficulties, hardships in life, etc. was water. The reason why the metaphoric subject 'water' is special is because it is the holistic metaphoric object encompassing the temporality, journey, transience, hardships in life. Feeling that the essential attribute of life and water resembles each other in many ways from the beginning of time, human race could form the bond of sympathy from deep inside of unconsciousness. That is the reason why the way of thinking that compares the life to water has been shared throughout all fields of religion, philosophy, culture and arts.
Sino-Korean literature works contained the metaphoric thinking and experience for life have exerted the literary value and personality by accommodating and the transforming the Chinese literary, philosophical and ideological products based on the common human perception. In this article, its aspect was examined by dividing into the aspect of metaphoric thinking and experience on the temporality of "Life is like a flowing river", the aspect of metaphoric thinking and experience on the transience of "Life is nothing but a bubble", and the aspect that compares and experiences how to live in the world to water. In there, the wisdom of ancestors who wanted to see the problems in life hard to be encountered more comfortably with the metaphoric perspective was contained. In addition, the Sino-Korean literature works exerted the literary bond of sympathy and the personality utilizing the metaphoric subject of water, which seemed to be familiar and old-fashioned at a glance.
Today, the modern people are familiar with the instant recognition, reaction and processing process based on the internet and SNS (Social Network Services). Therefore, it is expected that the Sino-Korean literature works provides the opportunity to relieve, purify and trans cend the anxiety and think widely, and can prepare the opportunity to introspect the meaning of existence and to explore the direction of life.
