익산 미륵사지 출토 <금제사리봉영기> 연구의 쟁점과 과제 - 문헌사를 중심으로 - (Issues and Challenges for the Study of Excavated from Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan - Focusing on the Historical Documents -)

초록

2009년 익산 미륵사지 서탑에서 <금제사리봉영기> 발견된 이후 관련 연구들이 진행됨으로써 미륵사에 대한 전모를 밝힐 수 있을 것이라 기대했지만, 미륵사 건립과 선화공주의 실체에 대한 혼란은 가중되었다. 이에 <금제사리봉영기>가 발견된 지 10주년이 지난 시점에 서 2009년 이후 현재까지 <금제사리봉영기>를 둘러싼 문헌사 연구의 쟁점을 세밀하게 고찰해 보았다.
『삼국유사』 무왕조와 <금제사리봉영기>의 내용 그리고 미륵사의 발굴 결과를 수용하여, 미륵사 창건과 <금제사리봉영기>의 발원자를 분리해서 볼 필요가 있다. <금제사리봉영기>가 미륵사의 모든 내용을 대변하고 있지 못하기 떄문이다. 따라서 미륵사의 조성이 먼저 이루어지고, 기해년(639년) 정월 29일에 서탑에 사리를 봉영하는 행사가 진행되었다고 해석해볼 수 있다. <금제사리봉영기>의 내용에 매몰되기보다는 이를 기점으로 시간성을 확정 짓고, 미륵사와 무왕의 시대로 그 시야를 확장시킬 필요가 있다.
<금제사리봉영기>를 비롯한 사리장엄 일괄품은 백제 미술 양식을 잘 보여줄 뿐만 아니라, 백제 후기 불교 및 왕실문화의 다양성, 그리고 고대 동아시아 문화교류의 양상을 밝혀주는 귀중한 자료이다. 따라서 미륵사 연구와 함께 사리장엄구 전반과 공양 의식, 그리고 출토 유물에 대한 자연과학적 분석을 비롯한 종합적인 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Since the discovery of <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement> at the west tower of Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan in 2009, it was expected that related studies would receal the whole story of Mireuksa Temple, but confusion over the construction of Mireuksa Temple and existence of Princess Seonhwa increased. Accordingly, at the time of the 10 years after the discovery of <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement>, the issues of research on the historical documents surrounding <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement> have been examined since 2009.
The current research trend is also strengthening the theory of subject matter at each stage of Mireuksa Temple, which accepts the contents of the Mu dynasty of 『Samguk Yusa』, the <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement>, and the excavation results of Mireuksa Temple, and separates the origins of Mireuksa’s founding and <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement>. This is because <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement> does not represent all the contents of Mireuksa Temple. Therefore, it can be interpreted that Mireuksa Temple was built first, and an event was held on the 29th of the first month of the year of Gihae (639) to enshrine sarira in the west pagoda. Rather than being immersed in the contents of <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement>, it is necessary to confirm the timeliness based on this and expand its view to the era of Mireuksa Temple and King Mu.
The collection of the buddhist reliquary, including <Gold Plate With Inscription of Sarira Enshrinement>, not only shows the style of Baekje art, but also reveals the diversity of Buddhism and royal culture in the late Baekje period, and the aspects of cultural exchanges in ancient East Asia. Therefore, along with the study of Mireuksa Temple, a comprehensive study including the general buddhist reliquary, the ritual for offerings, and natural scientific analysis of the excavated artifacts should be conducted.
