후삼국시대 중원지역의 연화문수막새 검토 (A Study ofLotus-Flower-Pattern Roof-End Tiles in the Jungwon Region of the Later Three Kingdoms)

초록

본 연구는 후삼국시대 또는 후삼국기로 불리는 9세기 후반에서 10세기 전반대의 남한강유역을 중심으로 하는 중원지역 연화문수막새를 검토한 것이다. 연화문은 삼국시대부터 조선 초기까지 기와의 주요문양으로 시문되었으며, 지역적인 특징과 시기적인 변화를 잘 반영하는 기와가 연화문수막새이다.
후삼국시대 전야라고 할 수 있는 통일신라후기의 중원지역 연화문수막새는 경주와 유사하게 연판과 같은 형태의 간판이 시문되는 연화문수막새와 연판 형태가 하트형인 연화문수막새가 주로 확인된다.
후삼국시대의 중원지역은 궁예와 왕건의 지배영역에 속하였던 곳으로 고구려계 연화문수막새가 주로 사용되었을 것으로 추정되어 왔으나, 최근 연구 성과에 의하면 고구려‧백제‧신라의 전통(양식)을 계승한 연화문수막새가 모두 확인된다. 이러한 현상과 배경에는 재지의 역사적 맥락이 작용하였을 것으로 추정된다. 즉 후삼국시대의 지배계층이나 지방 세력이 표방했던 정치적인 영향력보다는 재지의 역사적 배경(특성)과 장인 계층의 활동에 기인할 가능성이 높다고 판단된다.
고려 초기 중원지역은 고구려계와 통일신라계 연화문수막새가 병존하지만, 고구려계보다 통일신라계가 수량도 많고 문양형태도 다양하다. 고려 초기에 고구려계 연화문수막새가 지속적으로 사용되는 배경과 원인은 태조 왕건의 고구려 계승 정책과 관련이 있을 것으로 추정되며, 고구려 양식을 계승한 연화문수막새가 평양을 중심으로 출토되는 것도 같은 맥락으로 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study investigated the lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles found in the Jungwon region centered on the Namhangang River Basin from the late 9th to early 10th centuries, which is called the Later Three Kingdoms Period or the Second Three Kingdoms Period. The lotus flower pattern was engraved as the main pattern of roof tiles from the Three Kingdoms period to the early Joseon Dynasty, and lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles well reflect regional characteristics and changes over time.
Lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles found in the Jungwon region of the late Unified Silla period, which can be called theeve of the Later Three Kingdoms period, are mainly identified as lotus flower pattern ornamental roof-end tiles with intervals engraved in the same shape as the lotus pattern similar to those found in Gyeongju and lotus flower pattern ornamental roof-end tiles with a heart-shaped lotus print.
It has been presumed that the lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles derived from Goguryeo were mainly used in theJungwon region because it was under the control of Gungye and Wang Geon during the Later Three Kingdoms period, but a recent study confirmed all lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles that continued the traditions (styles) of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla were found. The historical context of thelocation seems to have played a role in this phenomenon and background. In other words, it is judged to be based on the historical background (characteristics) of location and the activities of the artisan class rather than the political influence claimed by the ruling class or local powers in the Later Three Kingdoms period.
The lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles of Goguryeo and Unified Silla styles coexisted in the Jungwon region of the early Goryeo period, but specimens in the Unified Silla style have beenexcavated in larger numbers than those in the Goguryeo style and display a variety of patterns. It is estimated that the background and cause of the continued use of the lotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles ofGoguryeostyle in the early Goryeo period are related to the Goguryeosuccession policy established by King Taejo Wang Geon, and in the same context, it is possible to understand whylotus-flower-pattern ornamental roof-end tiles that inherited the Goguryeo style have been excavated mainly in Pyongyang.
