石峯 千字文 서체의 서예적 위상 檢證 연구 (A Study on Verification of Calligraphic Stature of the Script in Seokbong’s Thousand-Character Classic)

초록

이 논문은 조선시대 4대 명필가운데 한사람으로 일컬어지는 석봉 한호(石峯 韓濩,1543-1605)가 선조의 명을 받아 해서체로 쓴 석봉천자문(石峰千字文)의 서체가 지닌 특성과 초학교재로서의 위상을 점검하기위하여 집필 되었다. 주지하듯이 천자문은 중국 남북조 시대의 학자인 주흥사(470-521)가 지은 4언 250구의 시구로 이루어진 문헌이다. 이 책은 조선시대 학동들의 한자, 한문 학습용 교재로 활용되었기 때문에 여러 종류의 판본과 사본이 남아있는데 그 가운데 가장 널리 쓰인 본이 바로 석봉천자문이다. 이러한 상황을 고려할 때 석봉천자문의 서체는 조선후기의 서예상(書藝象) 형성에 중대한 영향을 끼쳤을 것으로 판단된다. 그러나 필자가 확인한 바로는 서예 미학적 측면에서 석봉천자문의 특성과 가치를 점검한 본격적인 연구 업적은 전혀 없는 실정이다. 이러한 문제의식을 가지고 본고에서는 먼저 천자문의 자료적 가치를 검토하기 위하여 字音의 수, 부수 및 점획사용의 다양성과 균형성 등을 분석하였다. 이어서 석봉천자문의 서체가 지닌 심미적 위상을 검정하기 위하여 이 분야 전문가 5인에게 서체가 다른 명필 혹은 이름난 비첩의 특정 문자를 석봉천자문의 해당 문자와 함께 제시하여 설문을 통해 인상적 평가를 실시하였다. 그리고 석봉천자문 문자의 필획 형태, 결구 등을 종합적으로 분석하여 그 조형미를 천명(闡明) 하였다.
이상과 같은 연구를 통하여 수많은 조선시대 천자문 중 가장 활용도가 높았던『석봉천자문 』의 조형미를 검증하였고, 다양한 자음(字音), 필획 등이 활용되었음을 밝힘으로써『석봉천자문』의 한자, 한문 및 서예교재로서의 가치를 점검할 수 있었다. 그리고 석봉천자문은 해서의 기본이 되는 永 자 8법의 획(橫. 縱, 點, 捺, 挑, 拘, 折)이 모범적인 형태로 고르게 포함되어 있어 이를 바탕으로 학문적, 예술적, 교육적으로 다양하게 활용할 수 있는 서체로 개발하고, 그것을 DB화하여 현대문자 생활에 널리 활용할 수 있음을 밝혔다. 즉 초 중등 미술과 디자인교육과 서예교육 자료로 활용할 수 있으며 출판업계 디자인학계나 사회교육기관에서 교육 및 참고자료로 사용할 수 있는 것이다.

영어초록

This paper was intended to examine the characteristics of the script and the stature of calligraphic materials for beginner of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic, written by Seokbong Han Ho (1543-1605), one of the four great calligraphers of the Joseon Dynasty. Thousand-character classic is a literature composed of 250 phrases of four letters written by Zhou XingSi (470-521), a scholar in the period of Southern and Northern Dynasties of China. Since this book was used as a textbook for children to learn classical Chinese and practice classical Chinese characters in Joseon Dynasty, there remained many kinds of block-printed editions and manuscripts, and among them, Seokbong’s edition was the most widely used. Regarding this, the script of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic would have a significant influence on the formation of the calligraphic image in the late Joseon Dynasty. However, I have confirmed that there was no full-fledged research that examined the characteristics and values of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic in terms of calligraphy aesthetics. In this paper, to examine the literary value of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic, I first analyzed the number of letters and the diversity and balance of the use of radicals, dots and strokes. Subsequently, to verify the aesthetic status of the script of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic, I conducted an impressive evaluation to five experts in this field through a questionnaire that presented the specific letters of other scripts or other calligraphers compared with the letters of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic. In addition, I clarified the formative beauty by analyzing the strokes and structure of the letters in Seokbong’s thousand-character classic in a comprehensive manner. Through the analysis above, I verified the formative beauty of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic, which was the most widely used among various editions in the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, I could examine the value of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic as the learning materials of classical Chinese characters, classical Chinese and calligraphy by clarifying that various letters and strokes were utilized. Moreover, I clarified that the script of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic could be developed as a font used academically, artistically and educationally and utilized in modern life by making it into database because the script of Seokbong’s thousand-character classic contained the eight types of strokes (橫, 縱, 點, 捺, 挑, 拘, 折), which were the basis of the regular script. It could be utilized as materials for arts subject of elementary and secondary school, design education and calligraphy education, and it could be reference materials in the publishing industry, design academy or social education institution.
