초록

The aim of this paper is to identify the nature of null subjects in finite control constructions in Korean. It has been claimed that obligatory control (OC) with a PRO subject in a finite context can be attested in Korean. However, this paper argues for a pro analysis for finite control constructions in Korean.
First, this paper examined the OC status of the finite control constructions in Korean. Those constructions display the properties of OC which are widely accepted in the literature as the criteria for defining OC in non-finite clauses.
Secondly, this paper pointed out some problems for the PRO analysis of finite control constructions in Korean, examining the syntactic properties of the null subject in those constructions. Unlike typical non-finite control constructions, finite OC constructions in Korean show the availability of an overt pronoun or a reflexive in the null subject position. Also, there are some evidence that the null subject in finite OC constructions has nominative Case and inherent agreement features, unlike PRO which has been argued to inherit agreement features from its controller.
This paper further argued that the null subject in Korean OC constructions is not PRO, but pro, which is different from the long distance reflexive ‘caki' and an overt pronoun in that they show different distributions and referential properties.
