신라 기하문 인장과 문서의 封緘 (Silla‘s geometric seals and sealing of documents)

초록

한 국가가 원활히 운영되기 위해서는 중앙의 명령이 지방의 말단에 까지 정확하게 전달되는 것이 관건이다. 구두 명령은 수신자에 따라 자의적으로 해석될 여지가 크다. 이에 반해 문서에 적힌 명령은 정확한 의사전달이 가능하며 책임 소재를 가리기에 용이하다. 다만 문서 역시 이동 과정에서 개봉될 여지가 있다. 따라서 내용의 진정을 담보받기 위한 방법이 강구되었다.
문서의 진정은 인장의 날인을 통해 실현되었다. 동아시아에서 인장의 날인은 서주 말기까지 소급되며 춘추전국시대에 이르면 광범위하게 확산된다. 인장은 주로 인명, 숫자, 지명 등 주로 내용상 민감한 부위에 찍음으로써 위조를 방지하고자 하였다.
신라는 나당전쟁기인 문무왕 15년 중앙과 지방의 관청에 구리로 된 인장을 반급한 바 있다. 국가 비상시기에 범 국가적인 명령체계를 구축하려고 했던 것 같다. 그런데 신라의 인장 가운데 문자 인장 이외에 기하문 인장이 의외로 많이 확인된다. 인장의 재질은 청동, 납석, 토제, 목제 등 다양하다. 그리고 경주를 비롯하여 지방을 망라하여 출토된다. 다만 출토지는 역원, 산성, 사찰 등 특정 시설에 한정된다. 이는 인장의 사용자를 추정하는데 유용한 정보를 제공한다. 산성은 행정의 중심지이다. 더구나 삼척 흥전리사지, 양주 대모산성, 공주 공산성에서 출토된 인장의 사례는 문자 인장과 기하문 인장이 동시에 사용된 정황을 보여준다.
문자 인장의 경우 문서의 책임의 진정을 담보받기 위해 사용되었다. 그런데 문서의 내용 못지 않게 기밀의 유지도 중요하였다고 생각된다. 따라서 기밀의 유지를 위해 여러 보안책이 강구되었다. 문서는 대개 봉투나 함에 담겨 이동되었을 것이다. 그렇다면 내부 문서의 개봉 여부는 봉투의 입구나 함의 외부에 찍힌 인장의 훼손여부를 통해 알 수 있지 않을까 한다. 사실 기하문 인장은 문자 인장과는 달리 문양의 모양이 거의 같아 상하 구분 없이 무작위로 찍을 수 있는 장점이 있다. 이는 결국 문서의 포장 및 수발 시간의 단축으로 귀결되었다.

영어초록

In order for a country to operate smoothly, it is the key that the central command is accurately transmitted to the end of the province. Oral commands are highly likely to be interpreted arbitrarily depending on the recipient's level of knowledge. On the other hand, orders written in documents can be accurately communicated and it is easy to determine who is responsible. Since the document may also be opened in the process of moving, a method was devised to ensure the authenticity of the contents.
The authenticity of the document was realized through the sealing of the seal. In East Asia, the sealing of the seal is retroactive to the end of the Western Zhou period, and it spreads widely in the Spring and Autumn Warring States Period. Seals were mainly engraved on sensitive areas such as people's names, numbers, and place names to prevent counterfeiting.
Silla returned copper seals to central and regional government offices in the 15th year of King Munmu, during the Nadang War. He seems to have been trying to establish a pan-national command system in times of national emergency. However, among the seals of Silla, in addition to the letter seals, the geometric seals have been found surprisingly many. The material of the seal is various, such as bronze, pyrophyllite, earthenware, and wood. They are also excavated from Gyeongju and other regions. However, excavated sites are limited to specific facilities such as stations, fortresses, and temples. This provides useful information for estimating the user of the seal. The provincial fortress is the center of local administration. Moreover, the case of the seal unearthed at Samcheokheungjeonnisa Temple shows the situation in which both the letter seal and the geometric seal were used at the same time.
In the case of a character seal, it is used to substantiate the content of the document. However, I think that maintaining confidentiality is as important as the content of the document. Therefore, several security measures must have been devised to maintain confidentiality.
Documents would usually have been moved in envelopes or cases. If so, it is thought that the opening of the internal document could have been known through the damage of the seal on the entrance of the envelope or the outside of the case. In fact, unlike letter seals, geometric seals have the advantage of being able to take pictures at random without distinguishing between top and bottom because the shape of the pattern is almost identical. This ultimately resulted in a reduction in the time required for packing and sending documents.
