초록

본 논문은 중국 경학사에서 금고문논쟁(今古文論爭)이 지닌 사상사적 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 경학(經學)이 수천년 동안 다양한 변화 과정을 겪으면서도, 결코 단절되지 않은 채 중국 학술의 주류로서 그 생명력을 유지할 수 있었던 원인은 무엇인가? 경학은 역사 속에서 다양한 양상으로 드러났는데, 그 생명력의 원천은 경학 내부에서 치열하게 벌어졌던 금문경학과 고문경학의 논쟁에 의해 형성되었다. 한대(漢代)에 4차에 걸쳐 진행된 금고문논쟁은 두 학파가 각자의 연구방법론을 찾아 학문의 독자성을 확립하는 결정적인 계기가 되었으며, 경학은 이러한 두학파의 학문을 학적 기반으로 삼아 중국 학술사를 대표하는 학술 사조로 자리매김할 수 있었다. 다시 말해서 고문경학은 경전의 사실 고증을 통해 학문의 엄밀성과 객관성을 추구함으로써 학문의 내실을 탄탄하게 만들었다. 금문경학은 경전의 미언대의(微言大義) 해석을 통해 학문의 시대성과 현실성을 도모함으로써 학문의 외연을 확장하였다. 이처럼 두 학파에 의해 학문의 내실화와 외연화가 끊임없이 진행되었기 때문에 경학은 수천 년 역사의 변화 속에서도 학문의 정체성을 지키면서 그 생명력을 유지할 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to find out the academic historical meaning that the dispute about the current and old words had in the Chinese history of the study of the words written on Confucian classics. The study of the words written on Confucian classics has come through various changes but it has never been interrupted and kept its life as the main stream of Chinese academic field. How has it successfully maintained its vitality? The study of the words written on Confucian classics has been dealt in various ways in history. Such vitality was originated from the dispute that severely went between the study of the current words written on Confucian classics and the study of the old words written on Confucian classics in the study field of the words written on Confucian classics. This dispute had been made 4 times during the Han dynasty. Such 4 times of dispute had given both academic groups the crucial chances to looked out for their own study methodologies, so that they could finally establish their own study uniqueness. Academically based on such studies of the two academic groups, the study of the words written on Confucian classics has been able to be positioned as the academic stream that represents the Chinese academic history. In other words, the study of the old words written on Confucian classics has made the study itself firmly stable by pursuing the academic strictness and objectivity through the real historical investigation on Confucian classics while the study of the current words written on Confucian classics extended the study by looking for the trends and practicality of the study through the translation of Confucian classics in the way of MiEonDaeEui (微言大義: looking for the main idea of the words without the words themselves much focused on). As seen above, the study has been continuously stabilized and extended by such two academic groups, so that the study of the words written on Confucian classics has been able to kept its vitality without its academic identity broken even under the historical changes of thousands years.
