고려전기 문산계 운영에 대한 재검토 (A Review on the Operation of the Munsangye(文散階) in Early Goryeo)

초록

본 논문은 고려전기 문산계의 실제 운영을 검토하기 위한 사전 작업으로서, 문산계의 구조와 관직의 구조, 29등급의 문산계가 관료에게 지급되었는가의 여부, 관력(官歷)이 같은 경우 관료마다 받는 문산계가 같았는지의 여부 등 기존 연구에서 검토되지 못했던 사항들을 검토하였다. 그리하여 고려전기 문산계가 관직의 품계와 일치되어 지급된 것이 아니었음을 논증하였다.
고려전기 문산계는 종1품부터 종3품까지는 각 품계마다 단일 구조였지만, 정4품이하부터는 각 품계마다 상, 하로 나뉘었다. 반면 관직은 종1품부터 종9품까지 각 품계마다 단일 구조였다. 즉 고려전기 문산계와 관직의 구조는 일치하지 못하였다. 그리하여 문산계와 관직이 품계를 기준으로 직접 대응할 수 없었다. 이에 따라 같은 품계의 관직이라고 해도 이에 대응하는 문산계는 다른 경우가 많았다.
고려전기 실제 문산계가 운영된 상황을 살펴보면, 장사랑을 수여받은 뒤, 29등급의 개별 문산계를 차례차례 모두 받았던 것이 아니라 29등급의 문산계 중 일부 문산계를 수여받았으며, 품계에 의거해 승진을 해도 국가로부터 받았던 문산계는 관료마다 다른 경우도 많았다. 또한 장사랑은 관품에 관계없이 관료가 되면 국가로부터 지급되었던 것처럼, 고려전기 문산계는 관품이 아닌 다른 기준으로 문산계가 지급되었다. 고려전기 문산계 중 일부는 2개 이상의 개별 문산계가 동시에 주어지고, 공신 칭호처럼 개별 문산계가 누적되기도 하였다.
문산계와 관직의 품계가 일치하지 않았다는 것, 29등급의 문산계를 차례차례 모두 받았던 것이 아니었다는 것, 관품에 의거해 승진해도 받았던 문산계가 관료마다 다를 수 있었다는 것은 문산계와 관직의 품계가 직접 대응하는 관계가 아니었다는 것을 의미한다. 이는 관품에 관계없이 문산계와 관직이 서로 대응되었다. 또한 일부의 문산계가 품계에 관계없이 2개 이상이 주어지고 누적되었다는 것은 고려전기에는 동일 기준에 의거하여 전체 문산계가 운영되지 않았음을 의미한다. 관품과 상관없이 문산계와 관직이 서로 대응되고, 운영 원리가 일원적이 아니었다는 것은 고려전기 문산계를 새로운 각도에서 접근해야만 한다는 것을 말해주는 것이라고 하겠다.

영어초록

This paper is a preliminary work that reviews the actual operation of the munsangye(文散階) in early Goryeo. In particular, this paper deals with the items, that have not been reviewed in previous studies, such as the munsangye’s structure, its official organization, whether all 29 levels of the munsangye were given to the officials, and whether the officials with the same government official career received the same musangye. With it, this paper demonstrates that the munsangye was not given in match with the official rank in early Goryeo.
In early Goryeo, the munsangye had a single structure for each rank from Jong 1 pum(rank) to Jong 3 pum, but the pumgye(rank) was divided into upper and lower from Jong 4 pum to Jong 9 pum. Meanwhile, the official positions had a single structure from Jong 1 pum to Jong 9 pum. This means that the structures of the munsangye and the official positions did not match each other. Therefore, the munsangye and the official positions could not directly correspond to the ranks, so, there were many cases wherein even the positions with the same rank had different munsangyes.
Let’s view the practical situation of the munsangye operation in early Goryeo. When a person received the jangsarang, he was not granted all 29 levels of the munsangye, one by one, but instead, received some parts of the munsangye. Even if he was promoted according to rank, he received a different musangye from the country. While the jangsarang was allowed to all the officials, regardless of the rank, the munsangye in early Goryeo was given not by rank but by other criteria. In some cases, two or more munsangyes were given at the same time, and the individual munsangye was accumulated, such a the title of meritorious vassal.
From the facts that the munsangye did not match with the official rank, that all 29 levels of the munsangye were not given one by one and that, even when an official was promoted according to rank, his munsangye was different from that of his colleagues, we can conclude that the munsangye did not match directly with the official rank. Furthermore, the munsangye and the official position were corresponded with each other regardless of the official rank and some people accumulated munsangyes as they were given two or more regardless of rank. This means that the total munsangyes were not operated according to the same criterion in early Goryeo. The correspondence of the munsangye and the official position regardless of the rank, and the incoherent operation of the munsangye require us to approach the munsangye in early Goryeo from a new viewpoint.
