초록

본고는 산조와 창극을 중심으로 한국 서남해지역의 민속음악이 어떻게 전개되었는지 개괄하고 그 특징과 관련 인물을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한 글이다. 흔히 서남해는 협의의 권역과 광의의 권역으로 나누는데, 본고에서는 협의의 권역인 서남해를 대상으로 삼았다. 내륙지역으로는 목포를 중심으로 무안군, 영암군, 해남군, 강진군이 포함되며, 섬지역으로는 신안군, 진도군, 완도군이 포함된다. 이들 지역이 서남해의 가장 중심된 지역이라고 보았기 때문이다.
서남해에서 발전되거나 전개된 민속음악은 무수히 많지만 그 중에서 산조와 판소리, 그리고 창극을 본고의 대상으로 삼았다. 이들 음악이 巫係 및 음악인들과 직간접적으로 관련이 있다고 판단했기 때문이다. 먼저는 각 지역의 무속적 배경을 연행자와 연행 순서 등으로 간략하게 살펴보았다. 무속인들은 일정한 시점에 이르러 동인 조직을 결성하게 되는데, 그 중심이 신청(재인청)이다. 신청 조직은 시대를 거쳐 오면서 무속음악의 예술화 단계를 거치게 되는데 중요한 역할을 하게 된다. 이를 무속음악의 재창조작업이라고 할 수 있겠다. 이러한 도도한 흐름은 갖가지 국악 관련 협회나 단체들로 발전하고 급기야 서남해 민속음악의 중추지라고 판단되는 진도지역에 국립남도국악원을 설립하게 되는 토대로 작용했다는 점을 강조하였다. 특히 신청조직은 서남해지역의 민속음악 중에서도 기악 발전에 지대한 공헌을 한 것으로 보았다.
기악 및 창극 발전의 여러 가지 단서들로는 가야금산조 창시자로 불리는 영암의 김창조 및 그 예하 명인들, 대금산조의 창시자로 불리는 진도의 박종기, 창극의 창시자로 불리는 무안의 강용환 등을 들 수 있다. 무속음악이 서남해민속음악사에서 토대적 맥락을 가지고 있다는 것은 전남지역의 세습무가 자체가 무가, 춤, 놀이를 토한 예술성, 연희성이 강조되는 특성을 갖고 있다는 점에서도 드러난다고 생각하였다. 무속음악만으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 예술음악으로 재창조되어 온 맥락을 전제한다는 뜻이다. 이 재창조적 맥락 속에서 산조가 짜여지고, 판소리가 전개되며 또 창극이 시도되었다고 생각하였다.
결국 서남해지역은 상고시대부터 현재에 이르기까지 도서지역과 영산강이 끊임없이 만나고 소통하는 공간이라는 점을 확인한 셈이며, 도서와 내륙이 영산강을 매개로 끊임없이 서로 만나서 새로운 문화를 창조해내거나 변화시키는 문화접변의 현장이었다고 말할 수 있다고 보았다. 따라서 무엇인가 끊임없이 창조해내는 능력이 지리적 조건을 통해서 생태적으로 잉태되었으며 그 인물들이 이 지역 민속음악을 재창조해왔다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This study has its purpose on summarizing how the folk music in the southwest area, Korea was developed centering around Sanjo(Korean instrumental music) and Changguk(Korean classical opera) and inquiring into their features. Usually, the southwest is divided into two part; a circle in a broad sense and a circle in a narrow sense. The study makes the last one as the object. As an inland area, the circle includes Muan county, Yeongam county, Haenam county, and Gangjin county centering around Mokpo city, and also includes Shinan county, Jindo county, and Wando county as an islands area. This is because the study thinks that those area are the most important area of the southwest sea.
There are a lot of folk music which has developed and spreaded in the southwest sea, but, among them, the study makes it as the object of study to Sanjo, Pansori(a traditional Korean narrative song), and Changguk, because the study estimates that these musics make an effort on a shamanic music directly and indirectly. First, the study briefly exams the shaman background of each area according to performers and performing orders. Shamans made a coterie organization up to a point of time, and the core of the organization was Shincheong(Jaeincheong, a group or organization of shaman and court musician). The organization made an important role in the artistic process of shamanic music as times goes by. This can be called as the re－creational work of shamanic music. The study emphasizes on these calm current because the current became many associations or groups of Korean music and after all, functioned as a foundation which, in Jindo county, established the National Center for Korean Namdo Performing Arts to be regarded as the central place of the southwest folk music. Especially, the organization of Shincheong seems to contribute on the development of instrumental music among the folk music in the southwest area.
Many evidences for the development of instrumental music and Changguk can be found in some examples; Kim Chang-jo who is called as the originator of Gayageum Sanjo(Korean instrumental music for Gayageum) and masters under his banner; and Park Jong-gi in Jindo who is called as the originator of Daegeum Sanjo(Korean instrumental music for Daegeum); and Kang Yong-hwan in Muan who is called as the originator of Changguk. The study figures out that the shamanic music has its basic context in the history of folk music of the southwest sea, and this fact can be found in that the hereditary dance of Jeonnam area itself has characters which an artistic feature and an enjoyable feature are accentuated by songs, dances, and plays. In other words, this means that the shamanic music doesn’t come to the end as itself, but premises the context to be re-created as an artistic music. In the context of this re-creation, Sanjo is made up, Pansori is developed, and Changguk is attempted.
Conclusionally, the southwest sea area is confirmed as a space which islands area and Youngsan River perpetually has met and communicated with each other from ancient times to the present. Therefore, the area can be said as the space of a cultural assimilation to re-create a new culture or change an old culture. Namely, it can be the area where perpetual creative power ecologically has been born by a geographical condition.
