<보은 법주사 주서무일편 병풍(報恩 法住寺 周書無逸篇 屛風)>의 서사자(書寫者)에 대한 논의 제고 (Reconsideration of Discussing the Calligrapher on the Folding Screen with Writing of the Chapter Against Indolence from the Book of Zhou at Beopjusa Temple)

초록

<보은 법주사 주서무일편 병풍(報恩 法住寺 周書無逸篇 屛風)>은 충청북도 유형문화재 제239호이다. 크기는 73.5×170.0cm의 10곡병이며, 감지에 금니로 썼다. 현재 충청북도 보은군 속리산면 법주사로 379(사내리 209)번지 법주사(法住寺)에 소장되어 있다.
‘주서무일편’의 명칭은 『상서(尙書)』의 일부분이다. 『상서』는 「서전(書傳)」과 「주서(周書)」로 구성된 주(周)나라의 역사서로, 그 중 「주서」는 총32편으로 구성되어 있다. ‘무일편’은 그 중 17번째 편명으로 주공(周公)이 지었다.
2004년 <주서무일편 병풍>에 대한 충북유형문화재 지정검토가 진행되었다. 이때를 전후로 선행연구자는 <주서무일편 병풍>의 서사자(書寫者)를 영조라 주장하였으나 충북문화재위원회에서는 <주서무일편 병풍>의 서사자를 확정하지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 선행연구자는 <주서무일편 병풍>이 문화재로 지정된 이후 게재한 논문의 제목을 여전히 「영조대왕 어필 <무일편>병풍에 관한 연구」라 명명하여 혼란을 초래하였다.
이에 본 논자는 선행연구자가 제시한 증거들의 문제점을 객관적으로 인지하고, 영조어필의 서체 특징을 파악하여 <주서무일편 병풍>의 서사자가 영조라 할 수 없음을 드러내고자 하였다.
영조어필은 촉체(蜀體) 즉 조맹부의 송설체와 왕희지의 진체(晋體)를 근간으로 한다. 다만 영조어필은 송설체 보다 강한 기필과 당당한 자신감이 드러내면서도, 팽팽한 긴장감 보다는 일정한 율동감이 있다.
반면 <주서무일편 병풍>은 ‘宀’의 첫 점획의 경우 영조어필과 유사한 부분이 있으나, 활발한 율동감을 지닌 영조어필과는 달리 방정한 편이다. 특히 영조의 모든 서체와 모든 시기에서 공통적으로 등장하는 ‘心’자를 <주서무일편 병풍>의 ‘心’자와 비교해 보면 그 차이가 명확히 드러난다. 영조어필은 ‘心’의 1획과 2획을 이어서 쓰는 것이 가장 많고, 분리해 쓰더라도 1획을 배세(排勢:밀어내는 형세)의 방향으로 운필한다. 영조어필의 개성이 완성되기 이전에는 <주서무일편 병풍>의 ‘心’자와 유사한 방식으로 썼으나, 오히려 전반적으로 점획이나 ‘파책(乀)’의 형태가 다르다. 가장 중요한 것은 <주서무일편 병풍>에서는 영조어필이 지닌 당당한 기세(氣勢)가 없다.
현재로서는 <주서무일편 병풍>의 서사자를 확정할 수 없으나, 영조의 어필은 분명히 아니다. 아울러 이 논문을 계기로 서예 유물을 조사하는 전문가단에 오랜 시간 서예와 서예사에 정진해 온 학자들이 더 많이 참여할 수 있기를 바란다.

The Folding Screen with Writing of the Chapter Against Indolence from the Book of Zhou at Beopjusa temple in Boeun is Chungbuk's tangible cultural property No. 239. It has 10 folding screens with each size of 73.5×170.0cm written in gold powder on special paper called Gamji in Korean. It is housed in the Beopjusa temple at 379 Beopjusa-ro, Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.
The name of the 'Chapter Against Indolence from the Book of Zhou‘ is part of "Shangshu". "Shangshu" composed of Shujeon and the Book of Zhou (Zhōu Shū) is a history book of Zhou Dynasty. Zhōu Shū consists of 32 chapters and its 17th chapter, 'the Chapter Against Indolence' was written by Zhōu gōng,
Designation of the Folding Screen with Writing of the Chapter Against Indolence from Zhōu Shū as one of Chungbuk's tangible cultural properties was discussed in 2004. Since before and after the discussion, the preceding researcher has argued King Yeongjo as the calligrapher of the folding screen even though Chungbuk Cultural Properties Committee hasn't confirmed the writer yet. Despite the fact, the former researcher still published his study titled ‘A Study on the Folding Screen with Writing of the Chapter Against Indolence with the King Yeongjo's Royal Writing’, which caused confusion.
In light of this, this study shows objective awareness of the problems regarding the evidence the preceding researcher suggested, and tries to reveal the calligrapher of the folding screen is not King Youngjo.
King Youngjo's strokes called Chockche in Korean are based on two calligraphic styles of Mengfu Zhao and Wang Xizhi called Songseolche and Jinche in Korean respectively. However, Youngjo's style shows stronger strokes and more confidence than Sonseolche along with regular sense of rhythm than tight tension.
On the contrary, the stroke of the Chinese letter ‘宀’ on the Folding Screen with Writing of the Chapter Against Indolence from Zhōu Shū is similar to that of Youngjo, but it is rather upright than Youngjo's showing cheerful sense of rhythm. The difference is clear when comparing the letter commonly shown on every stroke of Youngjo's calligraphy in every period with the letter ‘心’ on the Folding Screen. Youngjo's style generally shows the connection between the first and the second strokes. Even when the two strokes are separated, the first stroke seems to be seen pushed away. Before his style was established, his stroke was similar to the letter ‘心’ on the Folding Screen, but still generally speaking it is rather different in stroking tittle (upper dot) and '乀'. Most importantly, the Folding Screen does not show strong force and sprit in the calligraphic style of King Youngjo.
Currently, the calligrapher of the Folding Screen with Writing of the Chapter Against Indolence from Zhōu Shū cannot be confirmed, but it is clearly not Youngjo's calligraphic style. In addition, taking this opportunity, I hope that more scholars devoted to studying calligraphy and the history of calligraphy are involved in the group of experts investigating the remains of calligraphy.
