한국문학사 서술의 정치적 무의식 (Political Unconsciousness Revealed in the Description of Korean Literary History)

초록

이 논문은 문학의 역사라는 맥락에서 사건과 텍스트를 다루는 서술성의 의미에 대해 검토하였다. 서술이 지니는 어떤 속성을 사건들에 부여하고자 하는 보편성에 대한 요구는 거의 모든 한국문학사가 기반으로 삼고 있던 가장 강력한 정치적 무의식이다. 한국문학의 역사서술에 나타난 서술성의 문제를 살피려는 이 글에서 가장 먼저 대면해야 하는 것이 문학사가 지닌 이러한 역사 서술의 방법론이 기반하고 있는 보편성이다. 따라서 이 보편성의 문제를 역사의 진보를 향한 직선적 서술과 연관시켜 살피고, 최근의 역사 구성에 관한 이론적 논의를 검토함으로서 문학사 서술의 근본적인 조건을 되묻고자 하였다.
문학사 기술이 서구적 보편에 깊이 의지하고 있다는 역설은 그들이 상정하고 있는 문학사의 발전론과 관련해서 파악할 필요가 있다. 문학의 역사적 전개를 시대와 사회의 변화=진보에 기반하여 서술하는 방식은 한국문학사에서 매우 뿌리깊은 방법론이다. 인류의 삶과 문화의 결과들을 진보하는 생명의 유비로 파악하는 관점은 종종 다윈주의로 불리는 불리는 사회적 진화론에 바탕하고 있다. 생명 전체의 전체적인 특성을 진보로 파악하고, 인류의 문화도 이와 마찬가지의 진보를 이룰 것이라는 관점은 한국문학사의 시대구분에도 핵심적으로 개입해 있는 무의식과도 같다. 그러나 단일한 목소리와 진보의 이념에 기반한 ‘큰 이야기’로서의 문학사는 어쩌면 애초부터 불가능한 것이었는지도 모른다. 문학사의 의미망을 설정하기 위해 주체와 합리성에 의존하려는 것이 지금까지의 문학사가 보여준 관점이었다면, 이후로 가능한 문학사는 이질적인 기호들을 하나의 사건으로 인식하는 각각의 주제론들의 분열적 서술로 이루어져야 할지도 모른다.

영어초록

This study focused on examining possible meanings of descriptiveness that covers events and texts in the context of literary history. Demands for universality of applying certain descriptive nature to certain events indicate a strongest part of political unconsciousness on which almost all aspects of Korean literary history were based. Before examination into the issue of descriptiveness shown in historical description of Korean literature, this study should first face the universality as a foundation for such approach of literary history to historical description.
Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the questions of universality in associations with linear description toward the progression of history, and was also to examine theoretical discussions on latest historical composition, so that it could find out any answer again to questions about fundamental conditions of literary history description.
It is necessary to re-examine a paradox of literary history description relying deeply on Western universality in terms of developmental theory of literary history as assumed basically by the world of Korean literary history. One of very deep-rooted approaches adopted in Korean literary history is a description about literary history development based on progression that is represented by historical and social change. The viewpoint about the outcomes of human life and culture as analogy of progressive life is often based on the theory of social evolution called Social Darwinism. The viewpoint that considers overall characteristics of life as progression and believes progression of human culture in future reflects unconsciousness intervened critically in the periodization of Korean literary history. However, the literary history as ‘a major narrative’ based on uniform voice and progressive ideology may have been impossible from the outset. Conventional literary history has shown its viewpoints toward dependence on subjectivity and rationality to set a semantic network of literary history, whereas future literary history should possibly consist of divisive descriptions about respective thematic theories that consider heterogeneous signs as one event.
