전쟁의 기억은 집요하다. 휴전 협정 이후 60년이 넘는 시간이 흘렀지만 한국전쟁은 여전히 한국의 정치, 경제, 사회에 영향을 미치고 있다. 국토가 분단되고 엄청난 인명이 손실된 것 말고도 한국전쟁은 미국, 소련, 중국을 비롯해서 유엔군으로 참전한 국가들까지 많은 국가가 얽혔던 역사적 사건이었다. 이 연구는 한국전쟁에 참전했던 세 국가―중국, 콜롬비아, 미국―의 소설을 살펴보고자 한다. 중국계 미국작가 하진의 소설 『전쟁쓰레기』는 미군에 포로로 잡힌 어느 중국군 장교의 이야기를 담고 있다. 하진의 소설은 최인훈의 『광장』과 마찬가지로 전쟁 중 가장 약한 타자였던 ‘포로’의 시선으로 전쟁의 비극을 증언한다. 콜롬비아 작가 모레노 두란의 소설 『맘브루』는 남미의 약소국 콜럼비아 청년들이 한국전쟁에 동원되어서 겪은 비극을 다룬 소설이다. 이들의 경험은 1960-1970년대 베트남전쟁에 참전했던 한국 청년들의 경험과 중첩된다. 제임스 설터의 소설 『사냥꾼들』에는 한국전쟁 당시 미공군 전투기 파일럿들이 등장한다. 공중에서 전쟁을 겪는 이들은 지상의 참상에는 관심을 두지 않는다. 오로지 전공을 세우기 위한 경쟁에 몰두할 뿐이다. 다양한 국가들이 참전했던 한국전쟁의 진실에 접근하는 것은 매우 어려운 일이다. 분단의 현실과 냉전의 영향으로 그동안 한국전쟁을 돌아보는 시선은 국가주의와 이데올로기적인 분열로 가득했다. 이 연구는 남한과 북한의 국민들과 마찬가지로 전쟁의 또다른 희생자였던 참전국들의 청년들이 겪은 불안과 공포, 회의가 담긴 해외 소설들을 살펴보면서 한국전쟁의 비극을 다른 각도에서 조명하고자 한다.

영어초록

War memories remain pertinacious. The Korean War (1950. 6. 25-1953. 7. 27), in particular, has had a deep influence on the politics, economics, and society of South Korea for more than 60 years after the Korean Armistice Agreement (1953. 7. 27). The war was one of the most historical wars in the world, in that not only did the war cause the territorial division of the Korean Peninsula and an extraordinary death toll, but also many participating countries of The United Nations including the USA, the Soviet Union, and China were entwined in it. This study explores the novels written by novelists from three countries that had participated in the Korean War, namely, China, Columbia, and the USA. The Chinese American author, Ha Jin, wrote War Trash, depicting a Chinese officer captured as a prisoner of war (POW) by the US military. The novel testifies to the tragic side of the war from the POW’s eyes, the most vulnerable moments being during the war, and the narrative is quite similar to The Square, a novel by the South Korean author, Choi In-hun. The Columbian author, Moreno Duran, also wrote Mambru, focusing on adolescents from Columbia, one of the weakest nations in South America. The novel attests to the bleak experiences of these youths pursuant to Columbia’s military mobilization into the war. Their war experiences overlap with those of Korean adolescents who had participated in the Vietnam War in the 1960s-1970s. James Salter, an American novelist, wrote The Hunters, a story about US fighter pilots during the Korean War. Being interested in air battles only, the pilots have no concern for the terrible ground scenes, but resort to engaging themselves in a competition to be distinguished war heroes. In fact, it is very challenging to approach the truth of the Korean War especially when many countries had participated with various relations of interests. The Korean War has been recognized as the result of an ideological division and strong nationalism that were derived from and reflective of the reality of Korea’s territorial division and the Cold War. This paper aims to elucidate the tragedy of the Korean War from different viewpoints by exploring foreign novels that present stories of anxiety, terror, and skepticism from the perspective of another group of war victims, namely, the adolescents participating in the Korean War.
