This paper investigates the historical narrative in Nostromo, focusing on its meta-historical visions and contingency.
Nostromo reenacts the fictional history of the Occidental republic by aggregating and rearranging meta-historical viewpoints. The term of meta-history suggests history as subjective and fictional narratives, not as an objective record. In the historical narrative of Nostromo we can find meta-historical views instead of logical order among events.
The narrator, who has contradictory features of the omniscient and the relative, does not rely on a coherent viewpoint or one central character's perspective, nor does he narrate it as a sequential process. Instead, he or she represents the history of the Occidental Republic as synchronized fragments by juxtaposing meta-historical visions.
Contingency, not usually supposed as a historical agent, is the other aspect of the history in Nostromo. Joseph Conrad compares human life and their history to insensible knitting machine. This machine knits men in and out ruthlessly without any order or law. Like the cloth woven by the machine, the history in Nostromo is affected by contingency as well as causality, which is exemplified by Hirsch's death and his contingent participation in the foreign country and the unseen historical power of Golfo Placido.
