초록

역사가는 사료를 통하여 과거의 일을 복원하고 기술하고자 한다. 역사가는 사료 없이는 역사를 쓸 수 없기 때문에, 사료가 무엇인가라는 질문은 대단히 중요하다. 역사가에게 어떤 사료가 더 적절한 것인가에 대한 판단은 일반적으로 어떤 사료가 더 객관적인가를 그 근거로 삼고 있다. 그러나 근대 역사학을 지배해 온 이러한 전통적인 관념은 인간 스스로가 그 사료란 것을 생산하며, 역사쓰기가 권력망을 완전히 벗어나 존재할 수 없다는 점을 간과하는 데서 연유한다. 그래서 누구를 위한 역사인가에 대한 물음이 역사란 무엇인가에 대한 물음보다 더 중요해지는 것이다. 물론 역사가는 역사쓰기를 위해 요구되는 자신만의 규칙이 갖고 있다. 과거를 가능한 한 불편부당하게 복원해야 한다는 것이 바로 그것이다. 사실 르네상스 휴머니스트들이 발명한 역사비판 방법은 역사쓰기를 더욱 정확하고 공정하게 만드는 데 기여하였다. 하지만 우리는 어떤 정교한 비판도 역사가의 다양한 편견과 편향을 완전히 제거할 수 없다는 점을 명심해야 한다. 왜냐하면 역사쓰기란 본질적으로 신념의 행위이지 단순히 ‘사실조각’을 맞추는 퍼즐놀이가 아니기 때문이다. 이러한 측면은 역사가가 더 고급한 수준의 역사를 쓰고자 할수록 더 부각된다. 위서는 이러한 점과 관련하여 사료가 지닌 다양한 측면과 층위를 잘 보여주는 경우라 할 수 있다. 우리는 위서를 단지 잘못이나 사기라고 치부할 수도 있겠지만, 때로는 위서조차도 역사가가 어떤 질문을 던지느냐에 따라 훌륭한 일차 사료가 될 수 있다. 이 글에서는 히틀러 일기, 『헤르메스 서』, 『시온 장로들의 의정서』를 통해 이러한 의문들을 다시 반추해보고자 한다.

영어초록

With historical sources a historian tries to restore and describe what happened in the past. Because without such sources he could not write his history, for him the question of what historical sources are is important. Generally a historian has had the notion which historical sources are more proper for his work. Their base of judgement is whether certain sources are objective or not. Such a traditional notion that prevailed in the age of modern historiography comes from the missing of the point that men creating so-called historical sources and with these writing histories are all working in the power network of various levels. The question of whose history it is rather than the one of what is history, therefore, becomes more important.
Of course, a historians has the rule of his own games required for writing history. It is that he has to restore the past with justice and fairness as possible as he can. In fact, the method of historical criticism Renaissance humanists invented made the writing of history more accurate and just. We, however, should not forget the fact that any elaborate criticism cannot remove historian's various prejudices and leanings because history writing is essentially an act of faith, not a simple puzzle game. Such an aspect become more important when he intends to write history of a higher level.
The case of forgery shows well such various aspects and levels of historical sources. We might regard a historical forgery merely as a fault or a fraud. But sometimes even a forgery could be a good primary source according to the question a historian raise. The Corpus Hermeticum, which has known as a forgery, made a great contribution to the stream of Neoplatonism through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Until recently the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, another manifest forgery, has used as the effective means of instigating people without cessation. Even the recent case of faking the Hitler Diaries shows that a historian does not regard the historical sources simply as the 'objective' evidences and that in the course of his work a complicate human motive meddles. In a word, historical sources are never just the mass of materials that could be objectively anatomized and analysed. They are the mass of materials that always reflects a historian's faith.
