초록

임진왜란 발발 이듬해인 1593년, 강화교섭이 진행되고 있는 과정에서 명군은 조선에 잔류한 일본군을 견제하기 위해 경상도 일대에 주둔하기 시작하였다. 특히 대구 八莒 지역은 경상도 방어를 위한 매우 중요한 요충지로 주목받으면서, 총병 劉綎의 지휘하의 대규모 명군이 주둔하였다. 임진왜란 당시 명군 1만여 명이 주둔하였던 팔거와 경주 지역은 단순히 군 주둔지로서의 성격만을 가진 것은 아니었다. 전쟁 전반기 명군의 조선 파병과 경상도 일대 주둔은 불과 1년여에 불과했지만, 이 지역 사회에 적지 않은 변화를 가져왔다. 물론 경상도 일대에 주둔한 명군은 주변의 조선인에게 피해를 주기도 하였다. 하지만 조선 조정이 명나라 군진에 필요한 대규모 군량과 물자를 마련하기 위한 움직임과 함께 생계가 어려웠던 많은 조선인이 명나라 군진에 투탁하거나 명군의 새로운 무예나 전술을 익히기 위해 다수의 조선군이 군진에서 함께 지내기도 하는 등 대구와 팔거, 경주 등의 명나라 군진은 전쟁 중에 큰 都會를 형성하였다. 명군의 주둔과 경상감영의 설치, 조선 백성들의 집결 등으로 인해 성주의 속현에 불과했던 팔거 지역은 전쟁 이전에 비해 면모가 일신되었다. 먼저 다수의 군병과 주민을 위한 가옥이 건설되고 상업이 활발히 전개되었다. 임진왜란 당시 대구, 팔거, 인동 등의 변화는 동아시아 대전쟁의 여파, 특히 명군의 참전과 주둔이 가져온 지역 사회 개발의 한 사례로서 상당히 흥미롭다. 아울러 전쟁 이전 주로 행정의 중심지로서 역할을 하던 조선의 주요 군현들이 조선후기에 들어서 경제와 유통의 중심지 역할을 한 경우가 적지 않다. 이는 전쟁에 의한 군사적 조치의 영향으로 인구 유동과 지역 개발 양상 등이 조선 후기 도시 발전에 중요한 모티브가 되었음을 반영한다는 점에서 대구, 팔거 등의 지역 변화 양상에 대한 검토가 연구사적으로 향후 중요한 의미를 지닐 것으로 평가된다.

영어초록

In 1593, the year after the outbreak of the Imjin War (the Japanese Invasions of Korea of 1592-1598), the troops of the Ming Dynasty of China were stationed in Gyeongsang-do to check the Japanese troops that stayed in Joseon while peace negotiations were underway. In particular, as the Palgeo (八莒) area in Daegu was noted as a very important strategic location for the defense of Gyeongsang-do, a large-scale of the Ming army was stationed under the command of the general Liu Ting (劉綎). During the Imjin War, the Palgeo and Gyeongju areas, where about 10,000 of the Ming troops were stationed, were more than just military bases.
In the first half of the war, the dispatch of the Ming army to Joseon Korea and their presence in the Gyeongsang-do area lasted only about 1 year, but it brought about considerable changes to the local community. To be sure, the Ming troops stationed in the area sometimes caused inconvenience to the local Korean people. However, the Ming military camps in Daegu, Palgeo and Gyeongju areas formed a large towns (都會) during the war since numerous people of Joseon who had difficulty in making ends meet sough refuge in the Ming camps and a large number of the Joseon troops stayed there to learn new martial arts or tactics from the Ming army along with the Joseon government’s move to prepare large-scale military provisions and supplies for the Ming camps.
Due to the presence of the Ming troops, the establishment of Gyeongsang-do Provincial Office (Gyeongsang-gam-yeong), and the gathering of the Joseon people, the Palgeo area, which used to be only a prefecture belonging to Seongju, was transformed from the time before the war. First, houses for many soldiers and residents were constructed and commerce became lively in the area.
Changes in Daegu and Palgeo areas during the Imjin War are quite interesting as an example of community development brought about by the Great War in East Asia, especially by the participation and presence of the Ming army. In addition, many of Joseon’s major counties and prefectures, which had served as administrative centers before the war, came to serve as the hubs of economy and distribution in the late Joseon Dynasty. This reflects the fact that following military measures to cope with the war, the flow of population and regional development became the important driving force behind urban development in the late Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, exploration of regional changes in Daegu and Palgeo areas is expected to have significant implications in the further studies of the Imjin War and related fields.
