최한기 『기측체의』의 수명관(修明觀) 연구 (Choi Han Ki's Kicheukcheui Study on Sumyunggwan)

초록

본 연구는 조선조 후기 철학자의 한 사람인 혜강 최한기(1803-1877)의 『기측체의(氣測體義)』에 나타난 수명관을 고찰하였다. 최한기는 34세 때 『신기통(神氣通)』과 『추측록(推測錄)』을 저술하였는데 이 저서를 합친 것이 『기측체의(9권 5책)』다. 최한기의 초기 저서인 『기측체의』는 그의 철학적 우주관, 인간관, 인식론적 구상을 담고 있으며, 그의 후기 대표작인 『기학』과 『인정』의 초석이 된다. 최한기 철학은 유기론적 우주관을 전제한다. 최한기는 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간, 인간과 사물, 사물과 사물의 관계성을 유기론적으로 인식한다. 이러한 최한기의 유기론은 기존 성리학의 이기론과 차별화된다. 성리학자들은 인간을 본구선천지(本具先天知), 양지양능(良知良能)한 존재라는 전제하에, 거경궁리의 방법을 통하여 구인성성(求仁成聖)하는 천인합일을 목표로 한다. 그러나 최한기는 인간은 추측의 능력이 있는 존재로 인식하며, 귀납적이며 경험적인 방법을 통한 천인운화(天人運化)를 수명의 목표로 삼는다. 본고에서 수명이란 신기를 닦아서 밝게 한다는 의미이다. 최한기는 수명의 대상으로 사허취실관(捨虛取實觀)을 제시한다. 사허취실관이란 인간의 인식체계로 다다를 수 없는 대상은 허망한 것으로 이를 학문의 연구대상에서 제외하고, 미루어 헤아릴 수 있는 대상인 실(實)에 집중함으로써 현실의 제반 문제를 해결하고, 올바른 통찰력을 얻는 것을 의미한다. 그는 먼저 자아의 수명을 통하여 스스로를 바로 세우는 것을 중요시 한다. 자아수명의 방법으로 성찰과 집중의 방법을 선택한다. 또한 사회제도에 대해서는 점진적이고 통섭적인 수명관을 전개한다. 사회․경제․정치에 대한 제도는 시간의 경과에 따라 폐단이 쌓이는데, 이 폐단은 올바른 변혁을 바탕으로 개혁하여야 한다. 적폐는 해결의 대상이기는 하지만 지나치게 급한 개혁은 사람들이 적응하기 어려워 혼란을 야기(惹起)할 수 있으므로 점진적인 개혁을 통해 안정 속에서 사회질서를 유지하고 지속가능한 발전을 이루어야 한다고 주장한다. 그는 수명의 목적을 자아실현, 공생, 이타에 두고 있다. 최한기는 독단에 빠지는 앎을 경계하여 늘 실천적인 삶을 반추(反芻)하는 검증의 방법을 통하여 수명의 완성도를 높이고자 한다. 따라서 최한기의 수명관은 4차 산업혁명으로 급변하는 이 시대에도 상황과 추세에 대한 바른 인식과 미래 예측의 능력을 제고하여 화락적 삶을 영위하는 중요한 방법이 될 수 있다.

영어초록

This research studied Sumyunggwan appeared on 『Kicheukcheui』 of Hyegang Choi Han Ki(1803-1877) who is one of philosophers at the latter years of the Joseon dynasty. Choi Han Ki in his 34 years old wrote some books like 『Singitong』 and 『Chucheukrok』, and the combination of these books is 『Kicheukcheui』(9 volumes and 5 books). 『Kicheukcheui』 which is the first book of Choi Han Ki contains his philosophical cosmology and human view and epistemological conception, and it becomes the foundation of his later representative books such as 『Kihak』 and 『Injung』. Choi Han Ki's philosophy makes a premise of Youkiron cosmology. Choi Han Ki recognizes the Youkiron between the human and nature, between the human and human, between the human and object, and between the object and object. This Youkiron of Choi Han Ki is differentiated from the Ikiron of the existing sanctology. The Confucian scholars presume that the human being has the judgment and action skill from his birth, and try to practice the love and get the perfect personality through the way of exploring the inner discipline and logic of things. However, Choi Han Ki recognizes that the human being can get the knowledge from his experience, having his objective of getting the wisdom to manage his harmonious 「Sumyung」 through the inductive and experiential way. In this paper, the 「Sumyung」 means to improve our intellectual ability and brighten it up. Choi Han Ki presents 「Saheochwisilgwan」 as the object of 「Sumyung」. Saheochwisil means to think as vain thing the subject that cannot become human being's recognition system, exclude it from the subject of academic research, concentrate upon the invaluable subject, solve the problem accompanied to the reality, and to obtain the correct insight. Choi Han Ki makes much of setting ourselves right first through the 「Sumyung」 of self. He selects as the self-「Sumyung」 the way of introspection and concentration. Also, as for the social system, he develops the gradual and comprehensive Sumyunggwan. The social, economic and political system has evil accumulated with time, so this evil should be reformed based on the right transformation, because the accumulated evils should be solved, but the overly urgent reformation can be hardly adapted by people that it may cause a confusion to them. He argues that through the gradual reform, we should maintain the social order in the stability and make the sustainable development. Choi Han Ki puts the objective of 「Sumyung」 in self-realization, symbiosis and altruism. Choi Han Ki takes precaution to the knowledge fallen into dogmatism, and tries to raise the completion of 「Sumyung」 always through the verification way of ruminating the practical 「Sumyung」. Therefore, I think Hyegang's Sumyunggwan can be also an important way of improving the correct recognition of the trend and future forecast skill and managing a harmonious life even in this epoch of drastic change due to the 4th industrial revolution.
