永明延壽의 淨土觀에 대한 一考 (A Study of YangmingYenshou's PureLand-View)

초록

永明延壽의 淨土觀은 일반적으로 指方入相의 정토를 배제한 唯心淨土라고 말한다. 唯心淨土라는 용어는 인도에는 없었고, 중국에서 생겨난 용어이며 최초로 사용한 사람은 李通玄이다. 그는 모든 정토를 분류하면서 아홉 번째에 唯心淨土를 설정하여 이를 禪宗에서 依用하여 그 전개과정에서 연수에게 수용되었다. 이러한 唯心淨土에 대한 諸家들의 견해에 대해서는 천태계와 선종계에서 융화적인 태토를 유지하여 唯心의 도리를 체득하는 것으로 구현하였다. 나아가 禪家의 唯心淨土는 혜능의 『壇經』에 나타난 내용을 오인하여 마치 서방정토나 타방정토를 배제하는 것으로 보아 唯理性說의 頓敎로만 보았지만, 그것은 분명히 절차적인 내용을 간과한 잘못된 인식이다. 연수의 방대한 저술에 나타난 唯心淨土에 대한 내용은 지극히 적어 세 곳 내지는 다섯 곳에 지나지 않는다. 하지만 그가 드러낸 唯心은 본래 무분별의 身土唯心의 一淨이 一切淨한 法性淨土이다. 따라서 唯心淨土와 他方淨土의 관계에서 연수는 一切唯心造한 一淨이 一切淨한 唯心所現의 시방의 모든 정토를 아우른 唯心淨土이고, 달리 말해서 몸과 국토가 오직 마음이란 法性淨土 내지는 法性眞土임을 주장한 것이다.
연수가 주장한 唯心淨土觀은 일반적인 관점의 唯心淨土觀과 極樂淨土觀을 아주 밀접한 관계로 유착시켰다. 그래서 연수는 諸師들이 주장하는 唯心淨土觀과 시방의 淨土觀을 모두 인정한다. 아울러 모든 정토의 진정한 의미는 일체는 오직 마음이 지었다는 一淨一切淨이란 唯心淨土이다. 다른 표현으로는 身土唯心의 法性淨土 내지는 法性眞土임을 주장과 부합한다. 따라서 연수의 淨土觀은 淨心하면 淨土가 되는 圓融한 心性을 구현하는 圓修의 오염이 없는 淸淨心과 安樂한 淸淨心의 크나큰 깨달음이 실현된 法界眞心의 如來藏淸淨心이다. 왜냐하면 모든 제불여래의 法界身은 法界의 無爲法身이기 때문에 無所不在인 衆生心이기도 하다. 그러므로 일체는 본래 분별이 없는 一心의 一淨으로 중생의 마음속에서 부처를 염하고 지으면 부처이고, 그 부처가 상주하는 法界가 淨土라는 一切淨이다.
