공자의 출신과 그 名 및 字의 상관성에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Ethnic Origin of Confucius and Its Interrelationship with His Given Name(名) and Courtesy Name(字))

초록

공자는 “子欲居九夷”, “夷狄之有君 不如諸夏之亡也”, “殷有三仁焉”, “殷因於夏禮” 등등 殷과 東夷에 대한 언급을 했지만, 자신이 은 출신이고 동이족이라는 말을 하지는 않았다. 다만 죽음에 임박해서 자공에게 꿈 이야기를 통해서 殷 출신임을 밝히고 그에 맞는 장례를 치러줄 것을 암시하였다. 공자는 백대의 스승이고 만세의 성인이라고 하며, 유학을 집대성한 대학자이다. 그런 그가 ‘자신의 출신을 밝히지 못할 이유는 어디에 있었을까?’하는 것이 이 논고의 쟁점이다. 혹자는 당시가 殷을 멸한 周의 세상이므로, 시대적 환경이 은의 후예임을 밝히기 어렵다고 하나, 필자는 공자가 부친의 가문을 잇지 못하고 천대받으며 자란 사실에 주목했다.
『공자가어』 등에 의하면 공자의 형은 첩의 소생인데다 足疾이 있었으므로, 그의 부친이 60이 넘은 늙은 나이임에도 불구하고 후사를 보고자 안씨에게 청혼을 했다고 한다. 그렇게 간절히 원해서 사회의 주목을 받으며 태어났다면 당연히 嫡長子로서 가문을 이어받아야 하는데, 공자는 선친의 산소자리도 모르고, 적장자의 字號인 伯字도 쓰지 못했으며, 선친의 채지인 郰(또는 聊)읍을 형에게 양보해야만 했다. 뿐만 아니라 ‘東家丘’나 ‘鄹人之子’와 같은 대부의 嫡長子라면 받을 수 없는 호칭으로 불리며 자랐다. 반면에 공자의 형 孟皮는 첩의 소생이고 足疾이 있다는 치명적인 약점이 있는데도 伯尼라는 적장자의 字를 씀으로써 가문을 이어받고, 그의 아들 忠(子蔑)에게까지 세습시킨 것이다.
이것은 무엇을 의미하는가? 공자가 숙량흘의 자식으로 인정받지 못했다는 것이다. 모친을 선친과 합장하고, 형의 딸을 南容에게 시집가는 것을 주선하는 것은 공자가 성장해서의 일이다.
그렇다면 공자 자신이 공씨의 후예인지조차 의심받는 분위기에서, 자신이 공씨의 후예이고 나아가 殷의 후예임을 드러내놓고 밝히기가 어려웠을 것이다. 그래서 그의 字에 尼가 아닌 (夷, 仁)를 넣음으로써 은연중에 東夷족이라는 뜻을 밝힌 것이고, 죽음에 임박해서는 더욱더 확실히 은의 후예임을 밝힌 것이다.
그런데도 공자의 학문을 공부하는 사람들이 한결같이 僧尼의 尼로 잘못 쓴다면 이는 공자의 뜻에 크게 어긋난 일이 될 것이다. 나아가 공자의 뜻을 제대로 알기 위해서는 “子欲居九夷, 子居之 何陋之有? 夷狄之有君 不如諸夏之亡也” 등의 내용을 비롯해서 殷과 夷에 대해서 후학자들이 편견을 갖고 잘못 풀이한 것도 殷과 夷를 인정하고 존경하는 내용으로 다시 재고되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Confucius himself did not directly mention he is of Yin(殷) and Dongyi(東夷) ethnic origin, although his Yin and Dongyi related comments are found in the Analects:“The Master was wishing to go and live among the nineYis(子欲居九夷),” “Yidi(夷狄) with rulers are not like the states of Xia without them(夷狄之有君 不如諸夏之亡也),” “the Yin dynasty possessed these three men of virtue(殷有三仁焉),” and “the Yin dynasty followed the regulations of the Xia(殷因於夏禮).”However, as death approached, when told about his dream to Zigong(子貢), he implied that he is of Yin ethnic origin and his funeral should be held in accordance with Yin funeral manners. Confucius has been regarded as the teacher of one hundred generations, the lord of ten thousand years, and the synthesizer of Confucianism. Nevertheless, “what were the reasons why he was unable to reveal his ancestry?” This is the main issue of this paper. Some have argued that due to living under the Zhou(周) dynasty, established after overthrowing Yin dynasty, it was difficult for him to disclose his ethnic origin as a Yin descendant. This paper, however, focuses on the fact that Confucius was not accepted as the eldest son and looked down upon during his childhood because of his birth.
According to Confucius House hold Sayings(孔子家語), Confucius’ father married Yan(颜氏) to have a son despite his age over 60 since Confucius’ elder brother was not only born of a concubine but suffering from foot disease. If Confucius had been born with a bang, he should have carried on the family line as the eldest legitimate son; however, he did not know the location of his father’s grave, could not use the character bai(伯) used as courtesy name for the eldest legitimate son, and had to yield Zou 郰(or Liao 聊) inherited from his father to his elder brother. Moreover, in his early days, he was called “Qiu of the Eastern house(東家丘)” or “ the son of the man of Zou(鄹人之子)” incompatible with the position of the Dafu’s eldest legitimate son. On the other hand, Mengpi(孟皮), his elder brother carried on the family lineage by using Baini(伯尼), style name for the eldest legitimate son and handed down the family line to his son Zong 忠(Zimie 子蔑) in spite of having fatal weaknesses such as being born of a concubine and having foot illness.
What does this mean? It means that Confucius was not accepted as the son of Shulianghe(叔梁紇). He buried his mother’s body together with his father’s and arranged a marriage for his brother’s daughter to Nanrong(南容) only after becoming an adult. It would have been hard for him to disclose the truth that he is a descendant of Kong family(孔氏), and furthermore posterity of Yin under the circumstances of having been even doubted whether to be the son of Kong family. Therefore, he put (yi 夷 or ren 仁) instead of ni 尼 to tacitly declare that he is of Dongyi ethnic origin. He also more clearly mentioned that he is a descendant of Yin than before as death approached.
Nevertheless, if disciples of Confucius constantly misspell his name as “ni(尼)” as seungni(僧尼), they go largely against his will. Not only that, but misinterpretations regarding Yin and Yi, including the content of “the Master was wishing to go and live among the nine Yis(子欲居九夷),” “wherever a gentleman lives, will there be anything low?(君子居之 何陋之有?)” and “Yidi with rulers are not like the states of Xia without them(夷狄之有君 不如諸夏之亡也),” done by biased scholars, need to be reconsidered in the direction of accepting and respecting Yin and Yi.
