초록

The objectives of this study were to classify regional types of Eup-Myon areas in Chungcheongnam-do based on principal characteristics and to clarify the changing aspects of regional types during the last 15 years, 1995~ 2010. Multi-variate techniques of factor and cluster analyses were applied with 17 primary variables using 169 and 171 Eup-Myon level data in 1995 and 2010, respectively. Applying the factor analysis with 17 primary variables of Eup-Myon level data, four principal factors were chosen as representative characteristics of rural areas in both 1995 and 2010, which included urbanized rural characteristics, typical paddy farming characteristics, fishery or side-job based farming characteristics, and industrialized rural characteristics. According to the cluster analysis, all of the Eup․Myon areas in Chungcheongnam-do were classified into 6 different regional types, which included deserted farming area, low-populated hilly farming area, traditional paddy farming area, mixed area with farming and non-farming, urbanized rural-centered area, and manufacturing rural industry area. During the last 15 years, some of the regional types had faced changing phases of its characteristics, which maintained farming characteristics in one hand but decaying state in another hand, particularly some areas belonged to the traditional paddy farming area or low-populated hilly farming area in 1995 were categorized into the deserted farming area, which covered 44% of Eup․Myon areas in Chungcheongnam-do in 2010, since they had faced decreasing population with increasing the old-aged. However some areas were faced further transitional state into urbanization or industrialization.
