전남지역 구석기시대 여러면석기의 기술형태적 특징과 기능 연구 (A Study on the Techno-typological Characteristics and Function of the Polyhedron of Paleolithic in Jeonnam Area)

초록

전남지역에서 출토된 152점의 여러면석기를 살펴보면 결과 여러면석기는 석기 표면의 대부분을 직접타격법으로 박리하여 그 외형이 둥근 형태를 갖는 석기를 말한다.
여러면석기의 형태는 기술형태적 측면에서 원형, 다면형, 부정형으로 분류하였다. 원형은 여러면석기의 완성형이며, 다면형은 여러면석기의 기술이 잘 적용된 것으로 모를 죽이지 않아도 그 형태가 다양한 완성형이다. 부정형은 여러면석기를 제작과정에 부분적으로 실패한 석기군을 말한다. 중기 구석기시대에서 후기 구석기시대로 갈수록 완성도가 떨어지는 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 후기로 갈수록 뛰어난 사냥도구의 등장과 발전에 기인한 것으로 생각된다.
여러면석기의 기능에 대한 연구에서는 실험고고학적인 연구를 통해 앞에 분류한 형태와 크기에 따라각각의 기능을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 여러면석기는 사냥도구로 사용되었을 가능성이 충분하다고 판단되며, 망치와 몸돌로 활용된 것은 그 기준에 맞추어 여러면석기를 분리하여 분류하여야 한다.
석기들 중 여러면석기가 각 유적별로 대부분 출토되고 있는 것은 자갈돌석기전통의 대표적인 석기라는 의미가 있다. 앞으로 이 석기는 기능적 속성, 제작기술 및 편년과의 관계 등 중기 구석기 이래 지속된 문화상에 대한 이해에 중요한 자료가 될 것이다.

영어초록

The polyhedron means a round-shaped stone tool to be flaked to the most of stone surface by a direct percussion when we look into 152 polyhedron artifacts excavated from Jeonnam area.
The study classifies the form of the polyhedrons into a round type, multi-faceted type, and indeterminate type at the techno-typological aspect. The round type means the completion-type of polyhedron and the form that the faceted ridge remains less than 50 percents. The multi-faceted type is that the techniques of polyhedron is well applied and the ridge remains more than 50% because the edge could be found.
This type is a completion with various forms. The indeterminate type means a stone group not to be finally completed owing to partial failure in the making process of polyhedron. The study could find out that the size of polyhedron had been smaller as the Upper Paleolithic had come and the completion degree had been lower than that of the middle Paleolithic as well. The reason would come from the appearance of various hunting tools as the late period had come.
In the research about the function of polyhedron, the study examines each function according to the classified forms and sizes with a study of experimental archaeology.
The results show that polyhedron has high possibility to be used to hunting tools and that the artifacts used to a hammer and a core should be classified to other group from polyhedron. Hereafter, the approach methods with usewear analysis, ethnography use, and a study on paleoenvironment should be necessary in order to figure it out more clear and objective to the functions of hunting tools, hammers, and pestles.
Among stone tools, polyhedron has been excavated in the most of the sites. This means that polyhedron is a representative artifact in the Pebble Tool Tradition. In future, polyhedron would be an important material to understand continued cultural aspect since the Middle Paleolithic like functional attribute, tool making technique, and the relation with chronology.
