이 연구는 노근리 사건을 소재로 한 정은용의 실화소설 『그대, 우리의 아픔을 아는가』를 중심으로 작품의 의미망을 검증하여 분단현실에 대한 작가의 인식을 알아보았다.
이 소설의 의미망은 전쟁의 폭력성과 그동안 은폐시켜 왔던 강대국의 허위성을 폭로하고 노근리에서 허망하고 무참하게 죽어간 영혼과 유족들의 명예가 회복되기를 간절히 바라는 데 있다. 정은용은 한국의 분단소설이 폭넓게 제시하고 있는 한국전쟁이 야기한 파괴와 그 맹목성을 추적하면서 거기서 민족집단의 상처를 확인함으로써 전쟁의 무모성을 일깨우며 평화와 사랑과 인간 생명의 존엄성이라는 보편적 가치를 작품을 통해 확인하고자 했다.
그러나 집단과 계층의 인물들을 남한 인물 중심으로 설정한 이 작품은 분단현실의 총체적 형상화를 이루지는 못했다. 남한 군경의 구체적인 활동상황이라든가, 보도연맹원의 처리지침과 그 수행에 대한 구체적 활동이 형상되었다면 분단과 한국전쟁에 관한 부당성을 객관화 할 수 있었고 공동체의 회복이라는 분단극복 가능성까지도 논의될 수 있었을 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to analyze a real story novel entitled ‘Do you know our pains?’ and written by Eun-yong Jeong, with a view to understand the metonymic meanings of ideology and the writer’s perspective of his era. The present author examined the semantic network of the novelist in order to know how he inspires the meanings of his perspective into his novel, since the perspective stands for his recognition of the realities of his divided country.
War is justified by the ideology of either party of the warriors, but it is still a violence and disaster which should take away all the hopes and expectations from us. The semantic network of this novel is meant to betray the recklessness and falseness of war ideologies and remind us of the barrenness of worldwide wars. Eun-yong Jeong traces the damages and blindness caused by the Korean War while identifying the bruises of the Korean race. In the novel, Jeong makes efforts to remind us of the rashness of wars and promote the universal values of peace and love and the dignity of human life.
However, the novel, which mainly cites South Koreans to portray characteristic classes and groups, does not succeed in generally describing the realities of divided Koreas. For example, it does not vividly depict the detailed activities of the South Korean military and police nor the specific procedures of action guidelines and their enforcement regulations applicable to the members of the Reporting League. This implies the fact that the writer himself was a victim of the national tragedy and so that he cannot maintain the balance of values in describing the division of his native land. If he successfully did that, he could objectively picture the injustice of divided Koreas and the Korean War. Furthermore, he also could discuss the possibility of overcoming the division. Anyhow, the novel is significant in that it exposes the absurdity of divided Koreas and the Korean War and awakens the attention of the people to the massacre committed at Nogeun-ri while searching for solutions and cures for the national calamities.
