초록

중국의 동서 문화 교류사에서 가장 핵심적인 사상적 쟁점이 되었던 것은 명말 청초 동서양 간에 있었던 하늘관 논쟁이다. 명말 청초 하늘관 논쟁의 핵심은 동양과 서양 중 어느 쪽의 하늘관이 옳고 그른가의 문제가 아니라 서로 다른 하늘관에 대해 어떠한 입장 과 분석적 태도를 가지고 접근할 것인가의 문제였다. 본 논문은 이 역사적 사실에서 비롯 된 논쟁들이 오늘날까지 동양과 서양에서 어떠한 역사적 함의를 가지고 있는지를 밝히 고자 했다. 이 주제의 핵심이 되고 있는 서양사상가들과 동양 지식인들의 논조를 통해 이 문제를 조명해 보고자 한 것이다. 17세기 중국 기독교전파과정에서 하늘관 논쟁의 중심인물로 거론되고 있는 마테오 리치, 롱고고바르디, 서광계, 이지조 그리고 라이프니츠의 분석적 태도와 사상연구의 결 과물들은 당시 동서문화의 사상적 교류에 가장 중요한 맥락을 형성했다. 하지만 이들에 대한 연구는 중국의 천명관이나 이(理)학에 대한 마테오 리치와 니콜로 롱고바르디의 분 석적 견해를 이지조나 서광계와 같은 중국 선비들이 분석한 것을 간단히 서술했거나, 중 국의 하늘관을 서양에 전한 생트마리나 말브랑슈 그리고 라이프니츠 등 서양 사상가들 의 견해를 간단히 서술한 것들이 대부분이었다. 따라서 이러한 맥락들이 어떻게 통시적인 차원에서 동서양 철학의 교류로 이어졌고, 급기야 ‘100년 금교’ 라는 동서 문화 충돌로 이어졌는지에 대한 근본적인 원인을 설명하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구는 17세기 전후 동서문화 교류사에서 핵심적인 주제로 상정되어 온 하늘관 논쟁이 동서양 사상의 교류에서 어떠한 역사적 함의를 가지고 있는지를 살펴 보는데 그 주요 목적이 있다.

In sino cultural exchange context between the east and the west, from the end of 16th century to the beginning of 17th century, the heaven view point arguments between the East and the West awake our desires for that academical knowleges. in reality, the key issue of this subject is not what we tell right from wrong between two camps, but what kind of research attitudes we can find in their cultural approach styles.
