Liu, Zhenyun is a representative writer of new realism novels and has built a 'new' form of realism literature through objective and realistic portrayals of individual everyday life routines, breaking away from Chinese realism literature, which has strong socialist characteristics. Among them, the novel Cell Phone, which attracted the attention of the public due to the popularity of the same movie, depicts a human being living in a modern city civilization through the medium of a cell phone. Cell phones and microphones are both important tools to verify the words and desires of all of the characters. The cell phone carries a desire for sex and affection, and the microphone carries a desire for authority. The characters do not talk to each other but ‘excrete’ their individual words. Their transformed desires and chaotic words are a form of expressing the alienation and solitude of the characters. In machine-oriented and city-based civilization, humanity is gradually isolated and genuine communication between the Dasein is not achieved. Ultimately, individual solitude is transformed into distorted desire, which leads to endless talking. There are many situations and devices for communication, but real communication is not happening, which is where irony occurs throughout the novel. However, there is another type of communication that goes through ‘silence’ among the many words in the novel. This ‘relationship in silence’ contains more possibilities of communication than other relationships. This novel seeks to find ways to solve city problems and human existence problems from the country in the past. The contrasting elements of city and country are found often in the novel such as rapidity and slowness, closeness and distance, and noise and calmness as different categories. In a slow, remote, and serene world, time and space create history and vitality. This contrasts with the appearance of modern city society.
