과잉되고 우회하는 말하기와 윤리적 듣기 - 송미경의 『광인 수술 보고서』를 중심으로 - (Excessive and Bypassing Speaking and Ethical Listening)

초록

아동청소년은 공적 세계에서 그들의 말을 직접적으로 소통하기 힘든 타자적 존재이다. 이에 아동청소년문학 작가들은 다양한 소재를 서사화함으로써 타자의 말에 집중하고 타자(아동청소년)의 경험을 대리하여 전달하는 작업을 지속적으로 진행해 왔다. 그러나 타자의 말하기 방식을 반영하는 작품의 형식의 측면에서는 여전히 더 다양한 시도가 필요하다. 본고에서는 송미경의 『광인 수술 보고서』를 통해 타자적 경험의 다층성과 낯선 말하기 방식을 전달하는 새로운 형식적 실험을 살펴보았다.
『광인 수술 보고서』는 학교 내 따돌림이라는 주제를 실험적인 형식인 ‘타자의 말하기 방식’으로 그려 보이는 작품이다. 본고에서는 이 작품의 ‘내용’, 곧 중심인물이 타자적 존재가 되는 과정과 중심인물의 ‘말’이 사라지는 과정을 추적함으로써, 타자를 인간의 경계 바깥으로 내모는 주체의 폭력과 인간으로서의 삶과 ‘말’의 관계를 살펴보았다. 『광인 수술 보고서』의 청소년인물 이연희는 의미 없는 것들을 혼절할 때까지 말하는 “증상”을 보이다 정신병원에서 광기 말기 판정을 받는다. 이에 정신과 의사 김광호는 그녀가 인간과 비인간의 경계에 있다고 진단하고, 다시 인간으로 살 수 있도록 만들기 위해 광인 수술을 하기로 결정한다. 그리고 그는 연희에게 이 수술의 과정에서 경험한 것을 보고서 형식으로 서술하게 한다. 이에 연희는 자신이 살아온 과정과 수술의 과정을 글쓰기 하면서 ‘광인 수술 보고서’를 작성하고, 김광호는 연희의 보고서에 의사로서의 소견을 덧붙인다. 이렇게 『광인 수술 보고서』는 타자의 말로 기록된 타자의 삶이라는 형식적 특성을 갖는다. 이러한 작품의 내용과 형식을 통해 독자들은 각자의 자리-성인주체, 미성년 주체, 혹은 연희와 같은 미성년 타자-에서 타자의 목소리에 담긴 고통의 기억을, 그녀를 다시 주체로 세우는 ‘말’을 듣는 기회를 얻는다. 이러한 듣기는 적극적으로 타자의 말을 통해 사건을 재구성하는 듣기이며, 윤리적 행위로서의 듣기라고 할 수 있다.
우리 사회 아동청소년의 목소리를 듣고, 그 속에 담긴 ‘말’을 섬세하게 분리해내어 아동청소년의 말하기 방식으로 말하고자 하는 성인 작가에게 듣기의 윤리는 중요하다. 성인 작가는 이 세계의 주체로서, 중심세계에 통용되는 문법으로 ‘말’할 수 있는 위치에 있다. 『광인 수술 보고서』의 작가는 윤리적 듣기를 통해 타자로서의 말하기를 시도함으로써 타자의 말을 중심세계에 통용 가능한 말로 소통하고자 아동청소년문학을 “재현 공간”으로 활용하고 있다. 타자의 ‘말’에 귀 기울이는 작가와 같은 타자적 주체들의 글쓰기는 아동청소년문학을 장소 삼아 타자의 말을 중심 세계에 드러내고, 독자로 하여금 그들의 말하기 방식을 경험할 수 있도록 한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

영어초록

Children and youth are the Others who have difficulty communicating their words directly in the public world. Writers of children’s and youth literature have been continuously working to convey the experiences of the Others (children and youth) on behalf of the Others by focusing on the words of the Others by narrating various subjects. However, more diverse attempts are still needed in the formal aspect of their works that reflect the Other’s way of speaking. In this paper, through Song, Mi-kyung’s <Report on Madness Surgery>, a new formal experiment that conveys the multilayered experience of the Other and an unfamiliar way of speaking has been investigated.
<Report on Madness Surgery> is the work that depicts the subject of bullying in school in an experimental form. In this paper, by tracing the ‘content’ of this work, I look at the process in which the central character becomes the Other, the process in which the central character’s ‘words’ disappear and also the relationship between the subject’s violence and human life. In <Report on Madness Surgery>, a teenager character Lee Yeon-hee suffers from ‘symptoms’ of saying meaningless words until she faints, and is judged by the doctor to be on the borderline of madness. In response, psychiatrist kim, Gwang-ho diagnoses that she is on the borderline between humans and non-humans, and decides to perform madness surgery to make her live as a human again. After the operation, he asks Yeon-hee to describe her experiences in the process of this operation in the form of a report. Yeon-hee writes a ‘report on madness surgery’ about her life and feeling of the process of surgery, and Kim Kwang-ho adds his opinion as a doctor to Yeon-hee’s report. In this way, <Report on Madness Surgery> has a formal characteristic of ‘the Other’s life written in the Other’s words’. Through the content and form of this work, readers have an opportunity to listen to the ‘words’ that makes yeon-hee the subject and the memories of pain contained in the voice of the Other. This listening is listening to actively reconstruct events through the words of the Other, and it can be called listening as an ethical act.
The ethics of listening is even more important for an adult writer who try to listen the voice of the Other and wants to speak in the words of the Other by delicately separating the ‘words’ contained the voice. As the subject of this world, the adult writer is in a position to ‘speak’ with the grammar used in the central world. The writer of <Report on the madness surgery> is using children’s and youth literature as a “representation space” to communicate the Other’s words with words that can be used in the central world by attempting to speak as the Other through ethical listening. A new form of writing by the writers, who listens to the ‘words’ of the Other is meaningful in that it allows the reader to use children’s and youth literature as a place to reveal the Other’s words to the central world and to experience their speaking.
