초록

이순원 문학은 작가의 연륜과 방대한 작품집에 비해 연구가 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 본고에서는 강릉 출신 소설가의 『말을 찾아서』에 나타난 강원(영동)의 정체성과 타자화된 이미지를 통해 영동지역의 주변적·타자적·전근대적 이미지가 재생산되는 이유가 외부인의 오리엔탈리즘적 시선과 심상지리에 기인한 ‘만들어진’ 정체성 때문으로 보았다. 작품집에 실린 다섯 편의 단편들에서 전화나 한 통의 편지는 여행을 추동하는 계기가 되며 여행지는 고향을 향하고 있다. 서울에서 유명작가가 된 주인공이자 여행자는 유소년기에 겪은 트라우마가 증상으로 나타나며, 여행지에서 과거와 타자와 대면하고 증상을 해석함으로써 상처가 치유되는 과거로의 여행이자 증상으로의 여행을 한다.〈말을 찾아서〉의 ‘나’는 양자의식에 대한 콤플렉스로 인해 아부제와 노새에 대한 죄의식을 갖고 있으며, 어른이 되어서도 말고기를 못 먹거나 말꿈을 꾸고 노새에 대한 원고를 쓰지 못하는 증상을 보인다.〈강릉가는 옛길〉에서는 학창시절의 상처를 끄집어내며,〈매듭을 이은 자리〉에서는 가문 잇기와 전통계승이 드러남으로써 식민화되고 전근대적인 토착민 이미지를 보인다. 남성중심적이고 혈연유대의식이 강한 이 지역에서 여성들은 환상적이고 신비화되며 침묵되거나 훼손된다.〈은비령〉과〈영혼은 호수로 가 잠든다〉의 친구아내는 여리고 아슬아슬한 바람꽃으로 연상되지만 독성이 있어 남성들을 죽음으로 모는 유혹자이자 위험한 존재이다. 연약하고 아름답지만 남성을 위험에 빠지게 하는 여성묘사는 보수적인 남성작가의 여성의식을 반영한다. 남편을 잃은 아내들은 남편친구에게 기부되거나 봉헌되는 대상이 되고 있다.〈시동에서〉는 불행한 가정 때문에 가출하여 카페에서 차를 나르는 여자아이, 첩살이하는 여자아이의 엄마, 강간당한 가정주부 등 상처입고 훼손당한 여성들의 타자적 삶을 통해 대상화·신비화된 여성 이미지가 나타난다. 이 지역은 또한〈시동에서〉처럼 서울에서 실패했거나 범죄를 저질렀거나 도피를 위한 여관투숙객들이 잠시 머무는 곳이다. 은둔하고 좌절하고 상처받았으며 도시에서 도태된 사람들이 모이는 공간이 동쪽의 시작을 의미하는 ‘시동’이다.〈영혼은 호수로 가 잠든다〉나 〈매듭을 이은 자리〉,〈말을 찾아서〉,〈강릉 가는 옛길〉에서 그려진 자살, 장례, 살인, 죽음 모티프는 이곳이야말로 음습하고 부정적이며 은폐된 지역임을 표상한다. 역동적·근대적·생산적인 대관령 너머와 전통적이고 정체된 대관령 이쪽의 지리적 대비를 통해 강원(영동)지역은 타자화된다. 이는 강릉 출신 작가의 시선이 서울사람의 입장을 갖고 있기 때문이며 아이, 여성, 동물, 서자, 양자를 희생시키는 작가의 전통적 ·가부장적·보수적 가치관이 드러난다. 미신, 주술, 전통, 관습 때문에 고통당하는 타자의 침묵과 외면 아래 갈등이 해결되고 상처가 치유되는 방식은 한계가 있으며 강원(지역)의 반역동적이고 비생산적이며 비극적 이미지를 고착화한다.

영어초록

There has been not much research on the literature of Lee Sun-won despite his years of experience and collections of works. This study reckoned that the identity and otherized image of Gangwon(Yeongdong) in Looking for the Horse, a collection of travel novels by the novelist from Gangneung, contributed to the reproduction of marginal, other, and pre-modern images of the Yeongdong region and that the cause was the "made" identity by the outsiders' orientalism views and imaginative geography. In the five short stories in the collection, a phone call or letter triggers the motivation to travel and moves the traveler to his or her hometown. One of the main figures is a famous writer in Seoul and decides to go on a trip. His childhood trauma is manifested in his current symptoms. He confronts his past and others and interprets his symptoms in his travel destination, which makes his travel a travel to the past and symptoms. In Looking for the Horse, "I" have guilty conscience for the stepfather and the mule due to my complex about the consciousness of being a stepson. Even as a grownup, I suffer from various symptoms such as not being able to eat horse meat, dreaming about the horse, and not being capable of writing about the mule. Containing parodic elements to the novels of Lee Hyo-seok, the work reveals the consciousness of blood ties and traditional Confucian order. The Old Path to Gangneung pulls out the wounds of his school days. The Place Where the Knots Are Connected presents the colonized pre-modern image of native people by revealing the succession of family and heritage. In the region dominated by the male-centric blood ties-based solidarity, women are becoming the object of fantasy and mystery, being silenced or damaged. In Eunbiryeong and The Soul Goes to the Lake and Sleeps There, the wives of his friends remind him of the soft, risky wind flower. However, they contain toxicity, thus being tempters and dangerous figures to drive their men to death. The description of woman as someone that is weak and beautiful but puts men in danger reflects the conservative author's view of women. Losing their husbands, the two wives are donated or dedicated to the friends of their husbands. In Shidong presents the objectified and mystified image of women in the area through the other lives of wounded and damaged women such as the girl serving the customers tea at a cafe after running from her miserable family, her mother living as a concubine, and a raped housewife. The area is also for the inn customers that have failed in Seoul, committed a crime, or are running from something like In Shidong. Meaning the beginning of east, "Shidong" is the place where those who are reclusive, frustrated, wounded gather around, after falling behind in the cities. In The Soul Goes to the Lake and Sleeps There, The Place Where the Knots Are Connected, Looking for the Horse, and The Old Path to Gangneung, the motifs of suicide, funeral, murder, and death symbolize the dark and damp, negative, and concealed nature of the area. The Gangwon(Yeongdong) region is otherized by the geographic contrast between the regions that are dynamic, modern, and productive over the Daegwallyeong and the hither side of it that is traditional, pre-modern, and stagnated. It is because the viewpoint of the author, who is from Gangneung, takes the position of a Seoulite, reflecting his traditional, patriarchal, and conservative values to sacrifice children, women, animals, bastard sons, and stepsons. There are limitations with the way that conflicts are resolved and wounds are healed under the silence and disregard of others suffering from superstitions, sorceries, traditions, and conventions. They way fixates the anti-dynamic, non-productive, and tragic image of the Gangwon region.
