명말 예수회 ‘천학 ‒ 선교신학’의 분화: 철학적 배경을 중심으로 (Differentiation of ‘Cheonhak – mission theology’ of Society of Jesus at the end of Ming Dynasty - Focusing on the philosophical background)

명대 말기 재화 예수회 내부에서 발화된 ‘중국전례논쟁’은 가톨릭선교사 ‘천학 ‒ 선교신학’이 분화되는 시발점이자 외재형식인 점은 특기할 만하다. 사실 예수회 천학의 분화요인에 관한 쟁점은 리치의 ‘적응노선’과 롱고바르디의 ‘보수(비적응)노선’ 간의 관계설정이 문제의 핵심이다. 그러나 양자 간의 ‘단절’ 혹은 ‘계승’이라는 상대적 편향성에 기대어 도출한 기존의 이론들은 본래적 천학체계에 내재된 ‘역사분화법칙’을 적확하게 읽어낼 수 없다. 따라서 선행연구에서 발견되는 편파적 일면성을 상호적 관계로 수렴, 통합하는 새로운 의미망이 요망된다. 리치와 롱고바르디의 선교학적 갈림길은 엄밀히 말해서 문화ㆍ복음 간의 ‘연속성’과 ‘불연속성’이라는 인식의 경계선상에서 촉발된 것이다. 리치가 무게 중심을 ‘연속성’에 두어 ‘문화적응주의적 상층학술노선’을 확정했다면 롱고바르디는 ‘불연속성’에 치중해 ‘신학(복음)보수주의적 평민영성노선’으로 나아갔다. 이 논단을 재차 두 노선 간의 관계설정에 대입해보면 단절성과 계승성이 동반하는 역사변증법적 천학의 분화과정을 포착할 수 있다. 리치는 정명제(These)로서 복음의 장력을 문화에 투영시켜 ‘연속성 ‒ 선유 똘레랑스’, ‘불연속성 ‒ 후유 앵똘레랑스’라는 후고박금厚古薄今을 내세웠다. 반면에 롱고바르디는 그 반명제로서 문화에 대한 복음의 불연속성을 견지, 리치의 ‘후유 ‒ 앵똘레랑스’를 계승ㆍ확장해 고금古今부정을 관철시켰다.

영어초록

That ‘names of translation Rites Controversy’ which was ignited in Society of Jesus in China at the end of Ming Dynasty was a starting point and external form which mission theology and Cheonhak differentiated deserves special mention. Key point of controversial issue about factors of differentiation of Cheonhak in Society of Jesus is to establish relationships between Matteo Ricci’s ‘adaptation line’ and Nicolas Longobardi’s ‘conservative(non-adaptive) line’. However, previous theories which were drawn based on relative bias, namely ‘severance’ or ‘succession’ between Ricci and Longobardi are unable to read ‘law of differentiation of history’ which is inherent in original Cheonhak system. Therefore, new meaning network which can collect and integrate biased one-sided disposition which is found in previous studies into reciprocal relationships is required. To put it strictly, the parting of Ricci and Longobardi in terms of missiology was triggered in the context of understanding of ‘continuation’ and ‘discontinuation’ between culture and gospel. While Ricci placed an emphasis on ‘continuation’ and determined ‘cultural adaptation contradiction scholarly line’, Longobardi laid stress on ‘discontinuation’ and proceeded to ‘conservative theology(gospel) spirituality line for common people’. Putting this criticism into establishment of relationships between two lines allows us to capture a process of dialectical differentiation of Cheonhak that discontinuation and succession accompany. Ricci put up Hugobakgeum(厚古薄今, meaning continuation is tolerance and discontinuation is intolerance) by projecting tension of gospel as thesis onto culture. On the other hand, Longobardi adhered to discontinuation of gospel towards culture as antithesis and succeeded and expanded Ricci’s ‘discontinuation ‒ intolerance’ and accomplished negation of time past and present.
