현풍 곽씨 언간의 ‘선어말어미 생략’에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Omission of Prefinal Endings in the Letters of the Hyeonpung Gwak Family)

초록

본고는 17세기 전반기에 쓰인 玄風 郭氏 諺簡을 대상으로 선어말어미 생략을 문법적으로 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 어미의 생략은 중세국어에서도 간혹 나타나며 21세기 네티즌의 통신언어에서는 남용되고 있다.
어간과 어미가 기계적으로 결합되어 문법적인 기능을 하는 한국어에서 어미의 생략은 특기할 만하다. 선어말어미는 경어법과 시상법을 중심으로 살피고 의도법은 17세기 전반기 때가지 유지되었을 가능성을 제기하는 데 그쳤다.
敬語法에서 尊敬法語尾 ‘-시-’는 생략되는 일이 드물며 話階에 따라 일관되고 적절하게 쓰이고 있었다. 謙讓法語尾는 후기중세국어에 비해 교체되는 異形態들이 단순화되어 나타나며 恭遜法語尾는 후기중세국어의 ‘--’가 ‘-이-’, ‘-ㅣ-’, ‘-ㅇ-’ 따위로 변형되어 나타나는데, 공손의 정도도 그만큼 약화되는 것으로 추정하였다.
時相法에서 과거 시상법어미 ‘-엇-’의 출현이 주목할 만하다. 과거의 상황을 표현할 때 시상법어미가 생략된 채 쓰인 경우와 어미 ‘-앗/엇’이 쓰인 경우가 비슷하게 나타났다. ‘-앗/엇-’이 과거 시상법어미로 자리 잡았음을 알 수 있었다. 미래 시상법어미 ‘-리-’는 특히 어미구조체 ‘-로쇠’와 결합될 때 수의적으로 생략되는데, ‘-리-’나 ‘-로-’가 모두 동명사어미 ‘-ㄹ’에 기원을 둔다는 점에서 생략되는 게 수긍이 간다.
意圖法은 근대국어 시기에 소멸한 것으로 알려져있지만, 17세기 전반기 자료인 현풍 곽씨 언간에서는 몇 예가 나타났다. 이때의 ‘-오/우-’가 의도법 기능을 하는 것인지 화석형으로만 존재하는 것인지는 좀 더 검토해볼 필요가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of the present study is to examine the grammatical tendency to omit prefinal endings appearing in the letters of the Hyeonpung Gwak family written in pure Korean in the early 17th century. Omission of endings is a phenomenon often found in Middle Korean, but is especially rampant in today's Internet communication. In the Korean language, in which a mechanical combination of a stem and an ending produces a grammatical function, the omission of endings is a very notable phenomenon. Out of the three functions of prefinal endings--honorific, temporal and intentional indicators--this study focuses on the first two functions, and briefly deals with the third suggesting the possibility of its retained use until the 17th century.
In the letters under examination, when prefinal endings function as an honorific indicator, the subject-honorific ending "-시-“ is hardly omitted but is used consistently and appropriately according to the speech level. As for the object-honorific endings, their substitutes are simpler here than those of Later Middle Korean. The politeness ending "--” appears in varied forms, such as "-이-,“ ”-ㅣ-,“ or "-ㅇ-," but the degree of politeness marked by these endings is presumed to be lower.
As for the prefinal endings that function as a temporal indicator, the appearance of the past ending "-엇-" is highly noteworthy. When past events are described, temporal endings are omitted in some cases, and "-앗/엇" is used in others with a similar frequency of the two cases. This shows that "-앗/엇" was fully recognized as a past ending when the letters were written. The future ending "-리-" is omitted arbitrarily when it is combined with the ending structure "-로쇠." This practice makes sense considering that both "-리-" and "-로-" originated from the same gerundial ending "-ㄹ."
Although the function of prefinal endings as an intentional indicator is known to have gone obsolete in Pre-modern Korean, these 17th-century letters have a few examples. Further studies are needed to find out whether the "-오/우-" functioned as an intentional indicator or just existed as its fossilized form.
