양인자의 노랫말에 드러난 인생관 연구 (A Study on the View of Life Exposed in the Lyrics of Yang In-ja)

초록

본고는 한국의 대중가요 작사가 양인자의 노랫말을 연구한 논문이다. 1945년 함경북도 나진에서 태어나 부산에서 자란 양인자는 서라벌 예술대학교 문예창작학과를 졸업하고 소설가, 드라마 작가, 작사가로 활동해왔다. 20여 편에 달하는 소설 작품집과 10여 편 이상의 드라마 극본을 집필하였음에도 불구하고 그는 주로 작사가로 알려져 있다. 그의 작품은 한국음악저작권협회에 283편이 등록되어 있는데 이는 주제에 따라 사랑과 이별의 정서를 다룬 작품, 일상의 해학을 다룬 작품, 그리고 인생에 대한 성찰을 주제로 한 작품으로 구분할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이 중 양인자의 인생관을 주제로 한 노랫말들을 연구 대상으로 한다. 대표적인 작품들을 분석하고 한 작가의 인생관이 시간의 흐름을 비롯한 여러 가지 외적 상황에 따라 변모해가는 과정을 밝혀내고자 하였다. 또한 이를 통하여 창작자의 인생관이 노랫말에 반영되는 양상과 그 과정에서 드러나는 노랫말의 장르적 특성을 살펴보았다.
1985년에 조용필의 노래로 발표된 <킬리만자로의 표범>에는 양인자가 20대 시절 가지고 있었던 인생관이 드러난다. 이 작품에서 양인자는 삶을 끊임없이 숙명적 고독을 마주하며 예술혼을 지켜내야 하는 사투의 과정으로 인식했다. 그러나 1992년 김국환을 통해 발표된 <타타타>에서는 삶의 온갖 시련들을 ‘덤’이라 이야기하며, 피할 수 없는 숙명을 긍정적인의 태도로 받아들이는 면모를 보인다. 이 곡을 통해서는 40대의 양인자가 갖고 있던 인생관을 엿볼 수 있다. 2010년, 60대에 이르러 조영남을 통해 발표한 <나는 신의 뜻을 알고 싶다>에서는 앞서 이야기한 것과 같이 숙명과 사투를 벌이거나 그것을 긍정적으로 받아들였던 모든 과정과, 그 사이에서 인생의 진리를 고민했던 모든 일들이 신의 뜻이었고, 그 진리에는 결코 도달할 수 없는 것이라고 정리했다.
<킬리만자로의 표범>과 <타타타>의 창작 시기는 약 20여년의 간격이 존재하지만 최초 발표 시기는 1985년과 1987년으로 2년의 차이가 있다. 상반된 인생관을 담은 두 작품이 비슷한 시기에 발표되었지만 모두 상업적 성공을 거둘 수 있었던 것은 활자로 직접 전달되지 않고 가수의 가창을 통해 발표된다는 대중가요 가사의 특성으로 인해 가능했다. 가수는 작사가의 페르소나로 기능하고 대중은 이를 통해 작품을 접하기에 이질감으로부터 자유로울 수 있는 것이다. 또한 상반된 내용의 <킬리만자로의 표범>과 <타타타>사이에 일관성을 부여하고, <나는 신의 뜻을 알고 싶다>여전히 정답에 도달할 수 없다는 것을 인정하면서도 더 이상 방황하지 않는 태도의 화자를 구현해낸 것은 작곡가와의 협업에 의해 작품이 발표된다는 특성에 기대었기에 가능했다.
이처럼 대중가요 가사는 전반적으로 다른 문학장르들과 비슷한 방식으로 작가의 인생관을 드러내지만 어떠한 부분에서는 그것만의 고유한 특성들을 활용하기도 한다는 것을 밝히고, 그 양상을 분석하는 것이 본 논문의 요지다.

영어초록

This study focused on the lyrics of Yang In-ja, a Korean lyricist for pop songs. Yang In-ja, who was born in Najin, North Hamgyong Province in 1945 and grew up in Busan, graduated from Sorabol Art College with the degree of Creative Writing and has been a novelist, dramatist and lyricist. Although she has written more than 20 novels and more than 10 drama scripts, she is mostly known as a lyricist. 283 of her works, which are registered in the Korea Music Copyright Association, can be divided into works that deal with the sentiments of love and separation, everyday humor and the introspection on life. In this study, among these three classifications, the lyrics about Yang In-ja’s view of life were chosen as the subjects of the study. The present researcher intended to analyze the lyricist’s representative works and discover how a lyricist’s view of life has changed according to various external situations, including the passage of time. In addition, through this process, the researcher examined the way the lyricist’s view of life is reflected in the lyrics, and the characteristics of the genres of the lyrics that were shown in that process.
Released in 1985 as Cho Yong-pil's song, ‘The Leopard of the Kilimanjaro,’ reveals the view of life that Yang In-ja had in her 20s. In this work, Yang In-ja recognized life as a process of desperate struggle to protect the soul of art, constantly facing the fateful solitude. However, in ‘Tathata’, released in 1992 through Kim Kook-hwan, she described all the trials and tribulations of life as a ‘bonus’ and took the inevitable fate with a positive attitude. This song provides a glimpse into the view of life of Yang In-ja in her 40s. In ‘I Want to Know God’s Will,’ which was released in 2010 through Jo Young-nam when she was in her 60s, she concluded that all the processes of struggles for fate or taking the struggles positively, and all the circumstances in which she had struggles with the view of life were God’s will and that truth can never be reached.
Although there is a 20-year gap between the creation of ‘The Leopard of the Kilimanjaro’ and ‘Tathata,’ the initial release dates are 1985 and 1987, only two years apart. Even though the two works with conflicting views of life were released around the same time, both were able to achieve commercial successes due to the characteristic of pop song lyrics, that the lyrics are not directly delivered in print but indirectly delivered through the singers. The public can be free from the sense of difference from the works since the singers function as the lyricist’s persona and the public is exposed to the works through the singers. Moreover, it was possible to realize a speaker who is no longer lost, while providing consistency between the conflicting contents of ‘The Leopard of the Kilimanjaro’ and ‘Tathata,’ and admitting through ‘I Want to Know God’s Will’ that the truth can never be reached, because of the characteristic in which the work is presented in collaboration with the composer.
The utmost purpose of the study is to reveal that the pop song lyrics disclose the lyricist’s view of life in a way similar to other literary genres in general, but it also utilizes its own unique characteristics in some areas, and to analyze these specific aspects.
