Development of an Instructional Model for Korean Grammar Utilizing Corpora

초록

Objectives Data-driven learning (DDL), which is a direct application of corpora in language education, has been proved to help language learners improve their language test scores, as well as satisfaction. Nevertheless, DDL has not been paid attention to in the area of Korean grammar teaching. Thus, this study aimed to develop an instructional model for Korean grammar based on DDL, explore the model’s benefits, and provide suggestions for improvement.
Methods First, according to design and development research, the study analyzed previous studies related to DDL and created an instructional model for Korean grammar, outlining six steps of teaching a lesson (i.e., warm-up, finding patterns and rules of grammar, explanation for grammar rules, individual task, group activity, and wrap-up).
Additionally, microteaching was conducted considering the six steps and investigating responses from an expert group composed of those teaching Korean and those majoring in Korean at the graduate level in the US.
Results Based on responses from the expert group, corpus materials and activities gained positive evaluation while the use of corpora in Korean grammar education was not relatively accessible. The results also showed that the instructional model for Korean grammar is beneficial, as Korean language learners are likely to be exposed to various Korean sentences, learn a variety of meanings and usages of Korean grammar, and increase their autonomy and interaction with peers.
Conclusions The instructional model, however, has room for improvement in terms of teacher training for utilizing corpora in Korean education, the establishment of corpora for Korean language education, providing effective feedback, and group activities. For future research, experiments need to be conducted with a large number of Korean language learners.
