초록

이 논문은 조선후기 제주도 한동리의 김해 김씨 가문을 대상으로, 특정 가계가 우월한 지위를 차지하여 가는 과정을 이들의 경제적 기반을 중심으로 논의하는데 목표가 있다. 이를위하여 김해 김씨 가문에서 전승해 온 방대한 고문서를 분석하였다. 잘 알려진 바와 같이 제주도의 경우 특정 가계에서 고문서가 전승되는 사례는 많지 않으며, 따라서 특정 가계에 대한 연구도 축적된 것이 많지 않다. 그러므로 특정 가계의 고문서를 중심으로 이들의 경제적기반을 밝히려는 이 연구는 제주도 지역의 연구에 큰 의미가 있을 것 같다.
논의의 중심은 18세기 중반 이후 장남이 아닌 삼남의 가계로서 점차 김해 김씨 가문의중심적인 역할을 하게 되는 가계에 나타난 일련의 변화이다. 조상을 위한 祭田을 자손들이나누어 가졌으나 이후 점차 삼남 가계로 집중, 관리되어 나가는 변화는 이 같은 특성을 분명하게 보여준다. 이와 함께 삼남 가계에서 문서들을 집중 관리하면서 전승해온 것도 이것을뒷받침하여 준다.
삼남의 이러한 역할은 토지 집적을 통하여 한동리에서 경제적 지위를 확립하는 것에 대응하여 이루어졌다. 반면 장남의 후손들은 한동리를 떠나 인근 지역으로 移住하였는데, 이것은 장남과 그 후손이 한동리에서 경제적 기반을 확립하지 못했고 이주한 지역에서도 그러했던 것도 작용하였을 것으로 보았다. 인근 지역에 장남과 그 후손이 거주하고 있음에도 불구하고 경제적 지위를 확립한 삼남 가계가 제사권을 행사하면서 김해 김씨 가문의 중심으로 부상한 것이다.
이 연구는 분재기는 물론 각종 명문과 수표를 모두 분석하여 그 구체적인 변화를 추적하였다. 제전이 장남이 아닌 비장남계의 특정 가계로 집중되고, 이들이 종손이나 종가의 위상을 차지해 가는 변화는 조선후기 종법 및 여기에 기초한 종족의 주형과는 맞지 않는다. 다만 이러한 양상은 저명한 인물을 배출하고 이를 중심으로 새로운 계파를 만드는 한국 종족의 특성과 크게 다르지 않다. 이 연구는 이 점을 강조하면서 지나치게 제주도의 특수성을 내세우는 것을 경계하려 했다. 요컨대 조선후기 가계의 확립 과정에서 지나치게 종족 규범에 기초한 동질적인 역사상 대신 다양한 층위를 보여주려 하였다. 한동리에 세거했던 김덕경 가계의 경제적 기반의 형성과 그 변화에 초점을 맞춘 이 연구는 방대한 고문서를 활용한 첫 작업이다. 이것은 가족과 친족의 형성에서 경제적 지형의 중요성을 보여주는 좋은 사례가 될 것으로 기대한다. 나아가 방대한 문서 덕분에 경제적 기반과 사회적 지위와의 상관관계에 대한 후속 연구도 가능할 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to examine the process through which a lineage hold a prominent position among a family group in Handong-ri of Jeju, focusing on its economic basis. I analyze a large number of old documents handed down by Kim Duck kyung’s lineage for this study. As well known, there are not many cases of well-preserved old family documents being discovered in the region of Jeju and, as a result, the studies on an individual lineage as well as on households in this region have been rare. Therefore, the study presented in this paper is important not only because it attempts to reveal the economic basis of an individual lineage based on the rare old family documents but also because such rare study will substantially contribute to our general understanding of the local history of Jeju. The focus is placed on serial changes in the Kim’s lineage whose members were not the eldest son’s descendents but the decedents of the third son who have later taken over the role of the patriarch. In addition to the transmission of the old documents through the third son’s lineage, the fact that they, i.e., the third son’s descendents, had collected and administered many lands for Ancestral Memorial Services shows the characteristic of these changes well. The role of their lineage increased as the elevation of their economic status. Meanwhile, the eldest son’s descendents emigrated into a nearby region, and in the new region they failed to establish a firm economic basis which would have been required to maintain the leading role and exert influences on extended family members. This is why Kim Duck kyung’s descendents have taken the leading roles instead of the eldest son’s.
This study traces the specific changes in this process by analyzing Bunjaemungi(分財記), Myeongmun(明文) and other economic documents. It didn’t accord closely with a common practice in late Chosun that non-eldest son’s descendents collected and owned lands, called Wi-to(位土), intensively, leading to a dominant position as Jongson or the head family. On the other hand, it has not been rare in Korea that a new lineage emerges by the decedents of a social and political celebrity. For this reason, this study is careful not to interpret its result as the peculiarity of Jeju. But instead, I attempt to present the result as the evidences of showing the diversities in establishing the lineages. The current paper is my first study to focus on the analysis of old family documents that show both the process for Kim’s lineage to establish their economic basis and the changes in the process. This study provides a good example showing the importance of the economic basis when lineages were formed. I plan to carry out follow-up studies of the relationship between the economic basis and the social status utilizing old family documents
