에블리야 첼레비의 『여행기』에 투영된 17세기 한 ‘오스만르’의 세계관 (The Worldview of a Seventeenth-Century ‘Osmanlı’ Portrayed in Evliya Çelebi’s Book of Travels)

초록

본 연구는 17세기 여행가 에블리야 첼레비(Evliya Çelebi)의 『여행기』(Seyahatname)가 이스탄불을 중심으로 면밀하게 구성된 ‘오스만 세계’인 것으로 상정하고, 작품에 투영된 작가의 이른바 ‘오스만르’(Osmanlı)로서의 세계관이 지닌 성격을 밝히고자 한다. 오스만르는 오스만 왕조의 일원과 그에 헌신하는 술탄의 종복을 특히 이르는 말이었다. 이들은 당대 여타 국가의 엘리트와는 달리 개종과 궁정 학교에서의 교육을 거쳐 엘리트로 거듭난 이들이었기에 왕조와 술탄에 대한 남다른 충성심을 지니고 오스만제국을 이끌었다. 궁정 학교에서의 경험을 통해 스스로 오스만르로 인식했던 에블리야는 자신의 인생과 여행을 오스만르의 그것으로 조직화함으로써 자신만의 방식으로 제국에 바치는 기념비를 만들어냈다.
『여행기』에 투영된 오스만르의 세계관은 이스탄불을 하나의 창으로 삼아 세계를 바라보는 시각이었다. 이것의 근저를 이루었던 제국에 대한 오스만르의 자부심은 그것이 역사상 존재한 적 없었던 새로운 오스만 문명을 만들어낸 주체라는 인식으로부터 비롯된 것이었는데, 종교적 정체성을 넘어 술탄의 세계를 위해 헌신하는 모든 이들이 상생의 대상으로 존재할 수 있다는 것이 바로 이들이 가진 세계관의 핵심이었다.

영어초록

This study aims to reveal the nature of the worldview of the so-called 'Osmanlı' through the 17th century traveler Evliya Çelebi's Book of Travels. As a travel writer born in Istanbul, Evliya Çelebi travelled throughout the Ottoman Empire for over 40 years and wrote a ten-volume travel account, Seyahatname. It was composed of administrative and geographical informations that the writer directly observed and collected, customs, legends, and autobiographical stories of the writer himself, as well as anecdotes he experienced during the trip. This study aims to examine the life and biographical contents of Evliya Çelebi through his work and furthermore tries to define the identity of the group to which he belongs. This is an attempt to deal with the self-portraits and perceptions of others who led the Ottoman society in the 17th century through supposing Evliya Çelebi as a representative of Istanbul's elite group called 'Osmanlı'.
Evliya Çelebi recognized himself as an elite of the Ottoman Empire and wrote Seyahatname as a monument to the Empire. The fact that this work shows his identity as a 'Servant of Istanbul' is revealed in the fact that he devoted the first volume of his work to describing aspects of his hometown Istanbul, unlike other travelogues. In particular, this paper deals with his perceptions of Christians and Shiites, assuming that the first volume acts as a reference in the recognition and understanding of some others in the Ottoman world in the rest of the work. In the world of Seyahatname, these others existed at different distances and dimensions depending on their relationship with Istanbul. Evliya Çelebi’s descriptions of these people show his insight and perspective on the Ottoman world at the time in terms of emphasizing the role and importance of each of them as partners in imperial rule. It is also important in that it also reveals the identity and worldview shared by the Ottoman elite in the 17th century.
