초록

‘실천의 민속’이 문화적 유용성을 뜻한다면 ‘민속의 실천’은 문화적 유용화를 뜻한다. 유용성 있는 민속을 발견하고 현실생활에 민속을 유용화하는 민속학이 실천의 민속과 민속의실천을 아우르는 길이다. 실천민속학에서 ‘실천’의 의미는 ‘함’에서 찾지만 의도적으로 ‘하지않음’에서도 찾는다. 함의 실천이든 하지 않음의 실천이든 적극적인 가치를 실현하는 일을힘들여서 이타적으로 하는 것이 실천이다. 진정한 실천은 공동선을 위해 불이익을 감수하면서 부당한 것에 맞서는 변혁활동이다.
민속학의 실천은 오리엔탈리즘과 식민주의를 극복하고 민속자료를 근거로 미래 가치를귀납적으로 이끌어냄으로써 분과학문으로서 독자성을 확보하는 연구를 하는 것이다. 첫째 민속의 가치를 밝혀서 유용성을 입증하고, 둘째 이론 개척으로 민속학의 학문적 독자성을 확립하는 한편, 셋째 우리 것이니까 훌륭하다는 자민족 중심주의와, 넷째 전통이니까 소중하다는복고주의를 극복해야 한다. 그러자면 민속과 민속학에 대한 비판적 연구도 실천해야 한다.
적극적인 ‘민속의 실천’은 ‘실천의 민속’을 해명하는 데서부터 출발한다. 실천의 민속을제대로 알지 못하면 민속의 실천을 적극적으로 할 수 없다. 실천의 민속을 정확하게 알게 되면, 잘못 가고 있는 현실문화 관행을 바로잡아 실천할 수 있다. 거꾸로 민속의 실천을 적극적으로 구상하게 되면 드러나지 않았던 실천의 민속이 새롭게 포착된다. 인간해방의 실천 논리로 민속을 주목하면 전근대적 전통으로 간주되던 민속에서 여성해방과 노동해방의 가치를발견하게 된다. 그러므로 실천의 민속을 제대로 밝히는 일과, 민속의 실천을 창조적으로 수행하는 일은 서로 유기적 관계 속에 있다.
민속학이 민중의 삶을 민주적 주체로 가꾸어 가야 하는데, 오히려 민속학주의나 민속주의에 매몰되어 민중을 수단화하는 경향이 있다. 이러한 경향을 극복하려면, 민속을 선험적으로설정하여 조사연구할 것이 아니라, 민중의 삶 속에서 민속을 이끌어내서 조사연구해야 기존민속학과 다른 수준의 여성민속학과 도시민속학을 할 수 있다. 따라서 민속학은 학자 중심에서 민속 중심으로, 다시 민중 중심으로 나아가서 민중주의 민속학을 하는 것이 실천민속학의길이다.
민속학자의 학문적 실천 현장은 민속학회와 민속학과이다. 민속학회는 계속 확대되고 있는 반면에, 민속학과는 오히려 축소되어 통폐합으로 가고 있다. 대학에서 민속학이 위축되는것을 분과학문의 한계 탓으로 돌릴 것이 아니라, 이타적 연구의 실천과 민속학을 위한 공적활동으로 민속학과를 대학에서 더 확대하는 일에 실천적 노력을 기울어야 한다. 그러므로 개인적인 연구 업적 쌓기에 골몰하는 이기적 실천에 만족하지 말고, 민속학의 학문적 성장에이바지하는 큰 실천은 물론, 인간해방의 미래를 전망하는 적극적 대안문화 운동의 이타적 실천을 모색해야 실천민속학의 전망이 열린다.

영어초록

The ‘practice-centered folklore’ means cultural usefulness while ‘the practiceof folklore’ refers to cultural usability. It is the way of encompassing thepractice-centered folklore and the practice of folklore to find useful folkloreand use folklore in real life in folkloristics. The meaning of ‘practice’ canusually be found in ‘doing’ in practical folkloristics. However, it can also befound in ‘not doing’.intentionally. It is a practice to do altruistically becauseit is difficult to realize positive values whether it is the practice of doing ornot-doing. The true practice is a kind of revolutionary activity of standing upto injustice for the common good, willingly accepting disadvantages.
The practice of folkloristics is to overcome orientalism and colonialism,derive future values inductively based on folk materials and study to secureits identity as one of academic disciplines. First, it is necessary identify thevalue of folklore to prove its usefulness. Second, it is required to exploretheories to establish the academic identity of folkloreistics. Lastly, it is neededto overcome ethnocentrism, a belief in the superiority of one’s own ethnicgroup, and reactionism, a viewpoint which favors the tradition. To this end,it is required to do critical research on folklore and folkloristicsThe active ‘practice of folklore’ starts from the clarification of ‘the practice-centered folklore’. The practice of folklore cannot actively be doneuntil the practice-centered folklore is not really known. If the practice- centeredfolklore is exactly known, the real cultural practice going wrong can bestraightened and practiced. On the contrary, the practice-centered folklore whichhas not come to the front is newly grasped when the practice of folklore isactively conceived. The values of the women’s liberation and the emancipationof labor can be found in folklore regarded as a pre-modern tradition whenattention is paid to folklore through the practical logic of human liberation.
Therefore, there is an organic relationship between the proper identification ofthe practice-centered folklore and the creative performance of the folklorepractice.
There is a tendency to use the public as a means because folkloristics isburied under folkloristicism or folklorism even though it should developpeople’s lives as democratic principals. To overcome this tendency, it isnecessary to investigate and study folklore after drawing it from people’s lives,not set up it intuitively. Accordingly, it may be possible to pursue women’sfolklore and urban folklore at the level different from the existing folkloristics.
Therefore, it is the way of practical folkloristics to pursue the folklore ofpopulism, changing from the scholar-centered to the folklore-centered and thento the people-centered approach.
The fields where the folklorist shall academically practice are the folkloresociety and the Department of Folkloristics. While the folklore society hascontinuously expanded, the Department of Folkloristics has rather reduced tobe merged with other departments. The reason that Folkloristics has shrunkin college shall not ascribed to the limit of an academic discipline. A practicaleffort shall be made to expand the Department of Folkloristics more in collegeas a public activity for the practice of altruistic research and folkloristics. Therefore, folklorists shall not just be satisfied with the selfish practice offocusing on their personal research achievements. They shall search thealtruistic practice of the active alternative cultural movement which prospectsthe future of human liberation in addition to the practice of contributing tothe academic development of folkloristics to view the prospect of practicalfolkloristics.
