초록

쿠두루는 앙골라의 독특한 역사적․사회적 맥락에서 발전한 대중문화로, 사회적 치유와 정체성, 연대를 보여주는 매개체로 기능해 왔다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 쿠두루의 형성과 발전 과정을 분석하고, 이를 통해 앙골라의 사회적 불평등과 억압 속에서 나타난 저항과 회복탄력성을 조명한다. 쿠두루는 도시의 대표적인 배제와 소외 지역인 무쎄끄라는 빈민촌의 열악한 환경에서 뿌리내리며 결핍을 창조적 가능성으로 전환하는 문화적 서사를 담아냈다. 이는 권위주의적 체제와 불평등 구조 속에서 소외된 사람들이 자신들의 목소리를 표현하고, 새로운 정체성을 형성하려는 집단적 노력을 반영한다. 따라서 쿠두루는 권위주의적 체제 아래 억압받는 계층의 목소리를 대변하며, 사회적 불평등과 구조적 모순에 대한 간접적 저항의 형태로 작용했다. 그러나 쿠두루는 체제 전복적 저항의 상징으로 해석되기에는 한계가 있다. 이는 쿠두루가 체제 외부에서 발현된 저항이 아니라, 체제 내부에서 허용된 문화적 표현에 머물렀기 때문이다. 쿠두루는 정부의 통제와 협력 속에서도 자신들만의 창조적 해석을 통해 문화적 생존을 이어가며, 체제와의 긴장 속에서 독특한 문화적 메시지를 만들어냈다. 또한, 쿠두루는 앙골라 특유의 쿠두루식 저항과 회복탄력성을 체화한 문화적 산물로서, 억압적 현실 속에서도 창조적 생존과 정체성 형성을 가능하게 했다. 그리고 쿠두루는 디아스포라와의 연계를 통해 초국가적 정체성을 형성하며, 지역적 한계를 넘어 앙골라의 문화를 국제적으로 확산시키는 데 중요한 역할을 수행했다. 디아스포라 공동체는 쿠두루를 통해 고국과의 문화적 연대를 유지하는 동시에 새로운 정체성을 창출하며, 앙골라적 가치와 문화를 세계에 알리는 데 기여했다. 본 연구는 쿠두루의 이러한 다층적 역할을 통해 대중문화가 현대 사회에서 수행할 다양한 가능성을 탐색하고자 했으며, 이를 통해 앙골라와 전 세계에서 대중문화가 가지는 정치적, 사회적 잠재력을 재조명했다. 이로써 본 연구는 쿠두루를 통해 대중문화를 억압 속 창의적이고 회복력 있는 사회적 실천으로 재해석한다.

영어초록

This study explores the multifaceted role of Kuduro, reexamining the political and social potential of popular culture in Angola and beyond. Kuduro, a form of popular culture that emerged within Angola's unique historical and social context, has served as a medium for social healing, collective identity formation, and solidarity. This study analyzes the genesis and development of Kuduro, shedding light on the resistance and resilience it reflects amidst Angola’s social inequalities and systemic oppression. Rooted in the marginalized and excluded urban spaces of musseques—Angola’s informal settlements—Kuduro embodies a cultural narrative that transforms scarcity into creative potential. It reflects the collective effort of those living under an authoritarian regime and structural inequalities to express their voices and forge new identities. As such, Kuduro acts as an indirect form of resistance against social inequalities and systemic contradictions, amplifying the voices of the oppressed within the confines of an authoritarian state. However, it falls short of being a symbol of revolutionary resistance, as it remains a culturally sanctioned expression within the system rather than a force operating outside it. Despite government control and collaboration, Kuduro has maintained its cultural vitality through creative reinterpretation, producing distinctive cultural messages amid systemic tensions. Moreover, Kuduro embodies Angola’s unique Kuduro-style resistance and resilience, enabling creative survival and identity formation even in oppressive realities. Through its transnational connections with the diaspora, Kuduro has fostered a global identity, transcending regional boundaries and significantly contributing to the dissemination of Angolan culture worldwide. The Angolan diaspora, in turn, has maintained cultural ties to their homeland while forging new identities, advancing Angolan values and culture on the global stage. This study positions Kuduro as a lens to reinterpret popular culture, showcasing its role as a creative and resilient social practice emerging from oppression.
