소크라테스의 논박술(elenchos)과 플라톤의 방법론 (Socrates' Elenchos and Plato's Methodology)

초록

지금까지 소크라테스의 방법론에 대한 연구는 플라톤의 초기대화편이 역사적 소크라테스에 대한 기록이라는 검증되지 않은 가설에 근거해서 이루어져 왔다. 『소크라테스의 변론』에서 『메논』까지를 초기대화편으로 설정하고 이 대화편들을 관통하는 일정한 패턴을 탐구함으로써 사람들에 대한 캐물음과 검사를 통해 혼을 염려하고 사람들을 도덕적 삶으로 이끄는 소크라테스 방법론의 실체를 규명할 수 있다고 생각했다. 하지만 초기대화편이 허구적 성격을 띤 문학적 창작의 산물이며 따라서 역사적 소크라테스를 회상하고 그의 실제 모습을 객관적 기록으로 남기기보다 플라톤 자신의 철학을 전개하기 위한 의도가 강하게 반영되어 있다는 주장에 주목할 필요가 있다. 이 주장에 따르면 역사적 소크라테스에 대한 비교적 사실적인 기록은 『소크라테스의 변론』이 유일하며 나머지 작품들에서는 소크라테스의 철학과 그 상속인을 자처하는 플라톤의 사유가 혼재되어 그 경계를 확정하기가 어렵다는 것이다. 하지만 연구자는 초기대화편이 문학적 허구의 성격을 지닐 뿐만 아니라 초기대화편에서 소크라테스와 플라톤의 사유와 철학 방법론을 구분할 수 있고 또 마땅히 구분되어져야 한다고 주장한다. 이 연구는 이러한 주장에 근거해서 지금까지 역사적 소크라테스와 등장인물 소크라테스의 방법론을 구분하지 않고 무원칙하게 혼재시키는 오류를 비판하고 역사적 소크라테스의 논박술을 ‘실존적 방법’으로, 플라톤의 철학적 방법론을 '전문가적 방법'으로 새롭게 재구성하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

영어초록

This Study aims at investigating Socrates' elenchos. The research into elenchos up to the present has been based on the unverified hypothesis that Plato's dialogues of the early period are the historical documents about Socrates. It would have been thought that one can find out the substance of the Socratic method, if one investigated a regular pattern through the earlier works. But Charles Kahn puts forward the claim that Plato's earlier writings are a fictional form in which there is no reason to look for the philosophy of the historical Socrates are a literary fiction, and in which Plato intended to develop his own philosophy instead. According to his opinion the only one document about the historical Socrates is just Apology. I'll try to reconstruct elenchos, the philosophical method of the historical Socrates, criticizing the misinterpretation to mix Socrates' with Plato's method imprudently.
In Apology Socrates insists that he has no wisdom about good life and the unexamined life, however, is not worth living. He obviously has a few of standards to which he appeals in making his examinations of others: his interlocuters must say only what they believe; the discussants must agree on the moral proposition of Socrates―one must not in any circumstances do wrong; eventually he examines their lives. Socrates is interested, not merely in the truth or falsehood of what people say or believe, but rather in the ways in which they live. This examining method of life is called elenchos, the practical method which aims at perfection of the Self through anxiety about soul and care for the Self. Elenchos is not a systematic but a very individual method which is applied according to ones personal history and character differently. I will call it 'existential method'.
Plato identified oneself as the heir of Socratic philosophy, but had to solve its dilemma at the same time. He needed to bridge the discrepancy between his ignorance of wisdom and his moral belief and practice on the one hand, to develop the personal and unsystematic method of Socrates on the other hand. Plato proposed craftsman's method as an alternative of his individual method, succeeding the Socratic life to search for wisdom. As trainer and doctor care for bodily health by making advantage of their knowledge and experience, so Plato's method needs a specialist to care for health of soul with his moral knowledge. This method had already been conceptive for the dialogues of definition which announce the idea of the good as nature and essence of virtue.
