초록

이 연구는 미디어문화연구에서 영상의 학문적 이용을 검토하고, 기존의 영상방법론을 참여적 영상방법론으로 확장하며, 참여적 영상방법론의 활용 가능성을 그 기능과 함께 고찰한다. 디지털 환경과 영상문화가 맞물려 영상의 양이 기하급수적으로 늘어나고, 영상의 존재 방식과 커뮤니케이션 방식이 함께 변화하고 있는 지금, 미디어문화연구에서 학문적 도구로서의 영상의 가치를 되돌아볼 필요가 있다. 미디어문화연구에서 분석의 대상으로 국한되어 이용되고 있는 영상은 참여적 영상방법론의 맥락에서 무궁무진한 가능성을 가진다. 참여적 영상방법론은 풍부한 데이터의 수집뿐만 아니라 성찰적 연구를 가능하게 하며, 참여적 영상방법론의 기능과 가능성은 디지털 환경의 전개로 한층 더 확장되었다. 영상의 다양한 활용이 출현하고 있는 현재의 맥락에서 독자적인 연구방법으로서의 영상에 대해 심층적으로 논의하는 이 연구는 국내 미디어문화연구에서의 영상의 한정적 역할을 비판하고, 영상의 학문적 이용의 가능성을 규명하고자 한다. 또한, 참여적 영상방법론의 여러 기능과 미디어문화연구에서 참여적 영상방법론의 활용 가능성을 고찰함과 동시에 참여적 영상방법론의 기존 활용 방식이 온전한 참여를 이루는지를 논의하고, 최종적으로 디지털 환경에서 참여적 영상방법론의 확장을 새롭게 상상한다.

영어초록

Focusing on participatory visual methodology, this study examines the current uses of visuals in the field of media cultural studies and discusses the potential of using visuals as research tools. At the same time, this study evaluates the current domestic and overseas usage of participatory visual methodology, and explores the possible extension of participatory visual methodology through the digital environment. In the field of media cultural studies, visuals are mostly used in the context of visual analysis. Considering the importance of visuals in the contemporary society, overlooking the potential uses of visuals is uncanny. As digital media and visual culture merged together throughout the first decade of 21st century, the amount of existing visuals grew exponentially, and the uses of visuals have changed as well. Such occasions demand new ways of utilizing visuals in the field of media cultural studies. At the same time, considering that media cultural studies strives to be reflexive at any stage of a research, it’s only logical to explore the possible uses of participatory visual methodology and the ways visuals can affect research participants. Furthermore, potential use of participatory visual methodology and its prospect have widened due to the digital environment. As visuals, sound and text converge in the digital environment, the voice of a research participant is able to reach the public beyond the academic world. At the same time, the digital environment makes it possible for a research to achieve the participation intact, and the participation in this context is perceived as a two-way conversation, not a one-sided monologue. This study is significant in that it criticizes the limited uses of visuals in the field of media cultural studies and tries to investigate visuals’ ability to function as empowering research tools.
