초록

깔뱅의 예정론은 『기독교강요』 초판에서 처음 전개되었고, 이후 1539년 판에서 보완된 형태로 나타난 이래 많은 비판을 받게 되었다. 어떤 사람들에게는 선택의 특수성이 모든 사람들을 위한 복음의 보편성과 상반되는 것처럼 보였다. 이러한 비판은 현대적인 의미에서 볼 때 깔뱅의 예정론은 선교에 부적절하다는 입장일 것이다.
복음 전파로서의 선교는 곧 하나님의 부르심에로의 초청이라 할 수 있다. 이 부르심에 응답하는 자는 신앙을 갖게 되어 구원을 받고, 응답하지 못하는 자는 불신앙 상태로 남아 있어 구원을 받지 못하게 된다. 이 부르심은 깔뱅의 예정론에서 선택의 결과로 나타난다. 또한 부르심으로 인해 신앙에 이르는 것도 선택의 결과이다. 선택과 부르심이 원인과 결과로 설명되는 깔뱅의 예정론은 선교와 밀접한 관계가 있다.
선택과 유기가 이미 결정되었다면 그런 상태에서 유기된 자에게 복음을 전한다는 것은 무의미해 보일 것이다. 그러나 깔뱅에게는 복음의 보편성과 선택의 특수성이 상충되지 않았다. 그래서 깔뱅은 그리스도가 온 세상의 구원을 위하여 준비되었으며, 보편적인 복음의 전파로 하나님의 은총도 보편적으로 드러난다고 분명하게 말할 수 있었다. 깔뱅에게 예정론은 선교에 장애물이 된다기보다는 선교를 필요로 하는 교리이다.
깔뱅의 예정론은 신론이 아니라 구원론에 위치해 있다. 또한 이러한 예정에 관한 말씀은 바로 성경에 나와 있다. 성경이 가르치는 예정론은 복음으로 선포되어야 한다는 것이 깔뱅의 입장이다. 따라서 복음의 보편성과 선택의 특수성이 조화되어 있는 깔뱅의 예정론은 선교 현장에서 침묵이 아니라 선포되기를 요청하고 있다. 복음 전파로서의 선교는 깔뱅의 예정론에서 필수적인 것이다.

In the original 1536 Institutes of the Christian Religion, Calvin developed his doctrine of predestination and enlarged his treatment of the doctrine in the edition of 1539. Since the doctrine was made public, a lot of criticism has been directed to Calvin’s stance on predestination, because the particularity of election and the universality of the Gospel appear run counter to each other. From the perspective of those who are concerned about mission, in particular, Calvin’s doctrine of predestination might seem to be unserviceable.
Mission as preaching of the Gospel can be construed as an invitation to God’s calling. Those who respond to this calling will be saved through faith, while those who do not, will not be saved by remaining in a state of unbelief. Calvin designates this calling and one’s having faith through the calling as evidences of the divine election of grace. Explaining the relationship of election to calling as that of cause to effect, Calvin’s doctrine of predestination is, indeed, tightly intertwined with mission.
If God had once for all determined, by an eternal and immutable counsel, both those whom he would admit to salvation, and those whom he would condemn to destruction, it might seem pointless to preach the Gospel to those who are not chosen. In Calvin’s mind, however, the universality of the Gospel and the particularity are not in conflict with each other. Calvin is convinced that Jesus Christ was sent for the salvation of the whole humanity and that the divine grace is universally revealed through universal preaching of the Gospel. According to Calvin, the doctrine of election in predestination is not an impediment to mission. On the contrary, it asks for mission.
Calvin’s treatment of predestination falls under the head not of the doctrine of God but of the doctrine of salvation. Understanding that the Scripture itself teaches predestination, Calvin holds that the biblical teaching on predestination is to be declared through the Gospel. Accordingly, Calvin’s doctrine of predestination, which maintains the balance between the universality of the Gospel and the particularity of election, requests not silence but proclamation in mission fields. Calvin’s notion of mission as preaching of the Gospel is indispensable to his doctrine of predestination.
