불교의 색채 인식론 (The study of color cognition in Buddhism)

초록

불교는 연기법을 바탕으로 반야사상의 ‘색즉시공(色卽是空)’, 화엄사상의 일체유심조(一切唯心造) 유식사상의 ‘유식무경(唯識無境)’으로 전개되어 오면서 인식대상자인 색과 인식 주체자인 마음이 둘이 아님을 표명한다.
‘연기’란 어떠한 색이라도 홀로 존재하는 색은 없다는 법칙이다. 색과 색이 만나고, 여기에 빛이나 온도 등의 외부적 환경 요소가 만나 수천수만 가지의 색이 창출된다. 이에 색은 연기의 이치에 따라 서로가 서로를 의지하는 관계를 이루는 것이다.
위에 근거해서 대승불교시대에 들어서면 색은 더 이상 나의 대상물이 아니며, 나와 분리되어 있지 않다는 불이(不二)사상으로 발전한다. 그러므로 색과 마음이 둘이 아니라는 교리에 비추어 볼 때 색에 대한 경험이나 감정은 주관적, 상대적 특징을 갖는다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

There are the subjectivity and objectivity in the cognition. So, the cognition is operated by the combination between main body of cognition and the object of it. It is important that we know how to see the relation of between the former and the latter. That is, should we regard the subject and object of cognition as ‘opposing dualistic or unitary relation'.
In realistic point of view, the subjectivity and objectivity of cognition is an opposing dualistic relation. It is the logic that an object exists at first and after that it has its image when it contacts with sense organs, whatever the objective thing is a material or a conception. This is the meaning that when the subjectivity of cognition is connected with the objectivity of it, the latter is a precondition and prerequisite at the same time. It is also the point of view that the subjectivity of cognition is prescribed for the objectivity of thing.
However, is the above view really appropriate? I will intend to consider that who the subjectivity and objectivity are, in terms of the color cognition, and that how to recognize color in the relation of both things. So I observed color cognition on the base of Mahāyāna in the purpose of this study.
Than, I can make a conclusion such result as the following content. The image or emotion of color occurs in our consciousness(識) through several constant steps of our cognition. Therefore, a sense of color formed due to a serious of experience is relative. Emotion of color is different according to subjectivity's ability and temperament or the environmental conditions of historic ․ cultural ․ conventional ․ racial, because of these reason, So emotion of color is not absolute. And Dependent arising(緣起) and mind consciousness are in the foundation of relative color cognition.
We can observe, throughout the above conclusions, the relation between my mind looking at color and color itself is different from each other and so is not itself. Therefore, "a color is the hue of my mind".
