『삼미지부론(三彌底部論)』에 나타나는 개아의 가설적 특징 (On the Characteristics of Person (Pudgala) in Sāṃmitīyanikāyaśāstra)

초록

『삼미지부론(三彌底部論, Sāṃmitīyanikāyaśāstra)』은 소위 개아론자(個我論者)의 입장을 대변하는 문헌으로 간주되어 왔다. 그런데 이 문헌에는 개아론자의 견해만이 아니라 당시까지 전해진 자아에 관한 다양한 견해와 비판들이 대거 등장하고 있다. 심지어 개아론에 반대했던 입장에서 개아론을 비판하는 내용까지 나타난다. 따라서 『삼미지부론』에 대해 개아론의 입장만을 일방적으로 내세우는 닫힌 문헌으로 간주해서는 안 된다. 이 문헌의 열린 저술 태도는 소속 부파인 정량부(正量部)가 당시 인도 불교계에서 가장 큰 규모였다는 사실과 무관해 보이지 않는다. 이 문헌의 취지는 당시 왕성했던 세력의 부파로서 그때까지 전해진 자아에 관한 다양한 주장들을 아우르면서 무아설의 본래 의도를 드러내는 데 있었던 것으로 여겨진다. 그러나 이 부파는 인도 이외의 지역으로 확산되지 못하였고『삼미지부론』이외에 그들의 생각을 뚜렷하게 드러내는 문헌도 남기지 못하였다. 따라서 그들의 입장에 대한 그간의 연구는『구사론(俱舍論)』등 개아론을 비판하는 문헌들을 통해 간접적으로 진행된 경우가 많았다. 특히 한국의 불교학계에서는 설일체유부(說一切有部)나 중관학파(中觀學派) 등 비개아론자의 입장을 통해 자아 혹은 무아의 문제에 접근하는 경향이 강했다. 따라서 비판적 시선을 논의의 준거로 삼았던 까닭에 이 문헌에 대해서도 객관적인 이해보다는 비판과 반박이 우선시되었던 느낌이 없지 않다. 이에 본 논문에서는『삼미지부론』이라는 개아론자 자신의 문헌을 통해 그들의 입장을 재조명해 보고자 한다. 이 연구에 따르면 설일체유부라든가 중관학파 등에 의해 시도된 개아론 일반에 대한 비판은 자아의 가설적 특징을 구체적으로 밝히고 있는 이 문헌에 온당히 적용되기 힘들다. 이 점에 대한 규명은 『삼미지부론』에 대한 균형 잡힌 이해에 보탬이 될 수 있을 것이며, 개아론 전반에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 데에도 일조할 수 있을 것이라고 기대한다.

영어초록

Sāmmitīyanikāyaśāstra (三彌底部論) has been regarded as a literature representing the position of the so-called Personalists (Pudgalavādins). However, in this literature, not only the opinions of the Personalists, but also various different views and criticisms on the self or person that were passed down to that time appear at once. There are even the contents that criticize the arguments for the existence of the self or person from the standpoints of the ontological selflessness that opposed the Personalists. Therefore, Sāmmitīyanikāyaśāstra should not be regarded as a closed literature that unilaterally puts forward only the Personalists’s position. The open attitude of this literature seems to have anything to do with the fact that Sāmmitīya school (正量部) was the largest in Indian Buddhism at the time. It is believed that the purpose of this literature was to reveal the original meaning of the teaching of the selflessness by encompassing various arguments about the self or person that had been handed down until then as a wealthy force school. However, this school did not spread outside of India, and there was no literature that clearly revealed their thoughts other than Sāmmitīyanikāyaśāstra. Therefore, modern researches on their position were often dealt with indirectly through literatures criticizing the theories of Personalists, such as Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. In particular, the Korean Buddhist academic communities have had the tendencies to approach the problems of the self or the selflessness through the positions of Sarvāstivāda school (說一切有部) or Madhyamika school (中觀學派). Therefore, because the perspectives of other schools were used as the basis for discussion, criticism and refutation on the theories of Personalists tended to be prioritized rather than an objective understanding on these. In this paper, I would like to objectively examine their position through the Personalists’s own literature called Sāmmitīyanikāyaśāstra. According to this study, the criticisms on the Personalists in general attempted by Sarvāstivāda-school or Madhyamika school cannot be properly applied to this literature that specifically reveals the hypothetical characteristics of the self or person. The identification of this part could serve as an opportunity to broaden the overall understanding of Sāmmitīyanikāyaśāstra along with a more complete understanding of the theories of Personalists.
