펑크 하위문화의 미학적 의의와 펑크 록의 한국적 변용 사례 연구 (The aesthetic significance of punk subculture and the case study of a korean transformation of punk rock)

초록

역사적 하위문화로서의 1970년대 영국 노동자 청년 문화인 펑크는 펑크 록, 펑크 스타일을 통해 자생적인 대중문화의 특수성을 보여주었고, 아울러 무정부적 허무주의 미학을 실천한 예술로서 그 의의를 평가받고 있다. 본 논문은 펑크 문화에 대한 분석을 통해 대중문화의 전복적이고 자생적인 성격에 대한 논의를 도모한다. 아울러 펑크록의 한국적 변용 사례를 인디 뮤지션 아마츄어 증폭기에게서 발견한다.
펑크 하위문화를 국제적으로 유명하게 만든 4인조 펑크 밴드 섹스 피스톨즈는 짧은 활동기간(1975-1978)에 영국의 일간지 일면을 장식하는 악행과 스캔들, 가십거리를 몰고 다니며 미래가 없는 노동자 청년들의 무정부적 허무주의를 조잡한 연주와 거친 가사를 통해 가감 없이 드러냈다. 섹스 피스톨즈의 펑크 음악이 대변하는 펑크 하위문화의 미학적 특성은 다음과 같다.
펑크록은 의식적으로 아마츄어리즘을 지향하며 주류 록의 전문가주의와 상업성에 반기를 든다. 펑크 밴드는 3개의 기본 코드로 기타를 연주하고, 리듬과 기교보다 카오스와 즉흥성, 자발성을 선호한다. 누구나 펑크 록을 노래하고 기타를 연주할 수 있다는 이런 정신은 DIY 정신에 기초한 것인데, 다이의 윤리는 저예산 펑크 음악 잡지인 팬진에서 잘 드러난다. 사회적인 상징코드를 교란하는 펑크 스타일은 길거리 부랑아들의 문화를 적극 차용, 하나의 패션 스타일로 만들었다. 정상적이고 규범화된 사회적 가치를 전복하려는 펑크 족의 패션은 ‘기호와 스펙타클이 스스로의 의미를 부정하게 만드는 대중매체화된 소비 중심 환경 안에서 길러진 청년들의 반응’으로 볼 수 있다. 다음으로 펑크문화는 역사적 하위문화에 대한 규정적 정의를 초과하는 특성을 보이는데, 이는 펑크 문화를 중산층 청년들이 향유했다는 점, 지식인들이 펑크 문화에 우호적으로 개입했다는 점에서 잘 나타난다. 펑크 록은 초현실주의와 다다와 같은 20세기 초 아방가르드 전략을 전유하면서 무정부적 허무주의를 구현한다. 한마디로 펑크 문화는 반미학의 미학의 맥락에서 부정과 저항이 어떻게 하나의 스타일, 제도로서 편입되는가를 보여주는 대표적인 대중문화 현상이다.
한국에서 이러한 펑크 록의 정신이 어떻게 전유되었는가를 본 연구자는 동시대 인디 뮤지션 아마츄어증폭기의 태도에서 살펴본다. 아마츄어증폭기는 노동자 계급 출신이면서 그렇다고 섹스 피스톨즈가 대변하는 바 모든 기성세대에 대한 부정과 분노의 정신을 따르지 않는다. 아마츄어증폭기는 주변부적인 삶들에 대한 따듯하고 서정적인 태도를 조악한 연주와 단순반복적인 가사를 통해 들려준다. 아마츄어증폭기는 아마츄어리즘과 다이의 윤리, 부랑자와 광대의 스타일을 전유하되 그를 통해 약자 혹은 민중의 삶을 대변하고 어루만지려 한다는 점에서 역사적 하위문화의 반복이면서 차이를 발생시킨다.

영어초록

Punk, which emerged among British youth laborers in the 1970s as a historical subculture, displayed the particularities of the spontaneous popular culture through punk rock and punk fashion and is now regarded as an art whose aesthetic emphasis is given to anarchic nihilism. In this study, I will attempt to inquire into the subversive and spontaneous nature of popular culture by analyzing the characteristics of punk. In addition, I will give the Korean indie rock singer ‘Amature Amplifier’ as the exemplification of the Korean transformation of punk rock.
As one of the most famous or notorious British punk bands, the Sex Pistols made the most scandalous gestures and wicked acts of raging youths with no future, and their sloppy performances, which consist of chaotic guitar-playing and violent lyrics, revealed the anarchic nihilistic sentiments of young laborers. The aesthetic properties of the punk subculture exemplified by the Sex Pistols are as follows:Punk Rock consciously attaches weight to amateurism and is against the professionalism and commercialism of mainstream rock. A punk guitarist uses three basic chords and prefers the elements of chaos, improvisation and spontaneity to those of rhythm and technicalism. The ethos of punk, ‘anyone can play punk’, is based on the DIY(Do It Yourself) ethic, which is well demonstrated in the low-budget punk rock music magazine, ‘fanzine’. Punk style, which disturbed social symbolic codes, appropriated the juvenile delinquency culture so as to create it as a fashion style. It can be said that punk fashion, aiming at the subversion of normal social values, represents ‘the response of the youth raised in the environment of mass-mediated consumption that forces signs and spectacles to turn against themselves’. Furthermore, punk culture is characterized by the exceeding the determinate definition of a historical subculture, which is well demonstrated by the friendly intervention of intellectuals into punk culture and the enjoyment of punk by middle-class youths. While appropriating the avant-garde strategies of Surrealism and Dada in the early 20th century, punk rock embodies anarchistic nihilism. In other words, punk culture is a popular cultural phenomenon on reflective of how the elements of negation and resistance find their way to the field of styles and institutions in the context of the anti-aesthetic.
In this article, I will examine the process of the appropriation of punk rock in the Korean indie music scene by focusing on the musical attitude of Amature Amplifier. Amature Amplifier is from the labor class and yet he does not follow the path of negation and rage against the existing generation unlike the Sex Pistols. Amature Amplifier’s warm and sympathetic attitude toward the marginal life is delivered through slipshod guitar playing and repetitive lyrics. Amature Amplifier mimics the mechanism of a historical subculture and yet is different from it in the respect that he intends to speak for the lives of the weak and the people and to appease their minds while appropriating amateurism, the DIY ethic, and the styles of vagrants and buffoons.
