자녀를 영재로 키우는 가정교육 ‘10訓’ (The 10 Parental Guidelines to Raising a Gifted Child)

초록

영재성을 구현하는 데 있어 영향을 미치는 변인들은 많이 있지만, 그 중 부모의 역할은 핵심적이라는 것이 많은 연구를 통해 밝혀지고 있다. 그 주된 이유는 부모는 자녀의 영재성을 가장 먼저 발견하고, 자녀에게 영재성 실현에 필요한 환경을 마련해 주고, 자녀와의 상호 작용에 가장 많은 시간을 할애할 수 있는 위치에 있기 때문이다. 그러나, 부모들은 영재성에 대한 여러 가지 잘못된 신화와 고정 관념에 묶여 있고, 또 영재교육 전문가들의 전문적 도움을 받을 수 있는 사회적 체제도 마련되어 있지 못한 관계로, 자녀의 영재교육은 산발적이고, 상식적이고, 주먹구구식으로 이루어지기 쉽다. 연구자는 이런 맥락에서 부모가 가정에서 자녀의 잠재적 영재성을 가시화하는 노력이 올바르고 체계적인 방향으로 이루어지도록 돕기 위해, 기존의 연구들을 종합하여 ‘10 訓’이라는 이름으로 가정교육 지침을 제시하였다. 이 지침들은 자녀들을 양육하는 과정에서 발생하는 문제들을 치료하는 사후적(事後的) 지침이라기보다는 올바른 교육적 안내를 제공하여 그런 문제들이 발생하는 것을 예방하는 사전적(事前的) 지침의 성격을 가지며, 교육계를 비롯하여 일반 사회에서의 영재교육에 대한 바른 인식을 확산하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

It is continuously noted by the researches that the parental role of letting their gifted child achieve excellence is the most critical among the various variables related to the manifestation of the potential giftedness. Through literature review on the topic of the parental role, the researcher presented 10 guidelines for parents of a gifted child to use in the course of interacting with them.
The first is to set the primary purpose of raising a gifted child to his or her self-realization. The second is to identify the interest area of the child. The third is to provide the child with the facilitative environment for developing the giftedness, The fourth is to have high expectation for his or her achievement. The fifth is to develop the affective traits that creative people possess. The sixth is to connect the child to mentor in his or her interest area. The seventh is to regularly have quality time and counsel the child. The eighth is to develop the harmonious personality of the child. The ninth is to make a life-long career plan and manage time appropriately. The tenth is to emphasize the process of manifesting his or her giftedness rather than the result.
It may be hard to say that the ten guidelines are sufficient to solve various kinds of problems that the child may confront during his or her daily life. However, because the guidelines were extracted from the main findings of the researches on gifted education, they can be regarded as valid for the principles for parents to employ in interacting with their gifted child. and it needs to be considered that they have the value as educational guidance and prevention of the problems in general rather than as curing mechanism of every specific problems that the gifted child may experience. Furthermore, it may be helpful for teachers in the formal educational institutions to understand and apply the principles to the education of the gifted as well as other school populations. And it is highly recommended that by sharing common understanding of the principles parents and teachers together establish cooperative system to help and educate the gifted child.
