초록

국립중앙박물관 소장 《회혼례도첩》(덕수6375)은 조선 후기 사대부 가에서 치러진 회혼례 행사를 다섯 장면으로 나누어 기록한 그림으로, 원래 화첩이었으나 행사의 의의를 밝힌 서문과 참석자인 좌목 등 부가 기록이 남아 있지 않아 학술적 연구가 다각적으로 이루어지지 못했다. 회혼례를 그린 현전 작품은 본 《회혼례도첩》과 《요화노인회근첩》(미국 예일대학교도서관), 〈회혼례도병〉(홍익대학교박물관) 3건과 19세기 이후의 평생도 병풍에 포함된 회혼례 장면 몇 건에 불과하다. 《회혼례도첩》에 대한 초기 연구는 주로 ‘풍속화’로서의 성격에 초점을 두고 진행되었는데, 최근 ‘기록화’ 연구 성과가 축적되면서 사대부 가에서 성행한 회혼례 행사의 시각적 기록으로서 의의가 크게 부각되었다. 본 논문은 기존 연구성과를 바탕으로 화첩의 제작과 향유의 맥락을 고찰하여 회혼례도 제작의 실상에 구체적으로 접근하고자 하였다. 인물과 공간, 기물 등 화첩의 내용을 분석하고, 화풍과 표현 방식을 검토하여 《회혼례도첩》의 제작 시기를 18세기 후반(4/4분기)으로 추정하혔다. 또한 이 시기의회혼례 거행 기록과 노신랑이 들고 있는 구장과 관련된 기록을 함께 고찰하여 행사의 주인공 특정을 시도하였다. 아울러 화첩의 제작 배경과 목적, 기능을 살펴보았다. 회혼례 절차를 여러 장면으로 나누어 세세하게 기록한 본 《회혼례도첩》은 회혼례도의 초기 생성 단계에 가까우며, 평생도 병풍으로 일반화되기 전 단계를 제시하고 있어 중요하다. 또한 화첩이 담고 있는 내용과 분위기는 가족적이며 친밀하며 화기애애하고, 손님을 대접하는 장면은 과시적이기보다 담백한 현장의 기록에 가깝다. 인물의 차림새와 행동 양태는 현장성이 강하고 구체성과 개별성을 지니고 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 화첩의 특징을 동시대성과 서사성으로 파악했으며, 화가의 치밀한 관찰과 세밀한 묘사가 이러한 특징을 뒷받침하고 있음을 분석하였다. 《회혼례도첩》은 가문의 역사를 기록하여 보존하려는 목적에서 제작되었고, 이는 조선 중기 이후 성리학의 심화에 따른 가족 질서의 재편 속에서 가문 의식의 성장을 배경으로 진작된 사가기록화의 흐름에서 이해된다. 필자는 공적 성격을 지니는 경수연도와 사궤장도가 더이상 활발히 제작되지 않는 시기에 회혼례도가 유행하였음에 주목하여, 사사로운 가문의 경사인데다가 유교적 의례로서의 근거가 없었던 회혼례가 사가기록화의 대상이 된 계기로서 사회적 인식의 변화와 그로 인한 명분의 획득을 주목했다. 주지하듯이 18세기 후반 궁중행사의 거행과 관련하여 군왕과 사친의 관계가 중요하게 대두되었는데, 이로 말미암아 국가의 안녕과 개인의 경사를 동일한 맥락에서 인식하려는 사고가 나타났음을 고찰하였다. 이는 ‘효’를 근간으로 부모의 장수와 해로를 축하하는 대중적 수연으로 자리매김한 회혼례가 가문의 사적인 행사를 기록하는 화첩으로 제작될 수 있었던 배경이 되었다고 보았다. 이러한 제작배경 하에서 창출된 화첩의 이미지는 공적인 명분보다 개인의 소망을 생생하게 드러내고 있으며, 이는 사실적인 화풍과 함께 인간 내면의 정서를 솔직하게 드러내는 조선 후기 회화의 진경적 면모를 보여준다. 《회혼례도첩》의 회화사적 성격을 통해 시대를 드러내는 조선 후기 사가기록화로서의 위상과 의의를 확인하였다.

영어초록

Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast (duk 6375) in the collection of the National Museum of Korea (NMK) contains illustrations documenting five scenes from a 60th wedding anniversary feast held by the family of a scholar-official during the late Joseon Dynasty. The illustrations are currently kept in the format of a painting album, but a few original leaves with additional records are missing, including the foreword extolling the significance of the event and the list of participants. Thus, academic research on this painting album has not been conducted from multiple perspectives. There are only a few surviving examples depicting a 60th wedding anniversary feast. They include this painting album at the NMK, Album of the 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast of Old Man Yohwa at the Yale University Library in the U.S., the Folding Screen of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast at Hongik University Museum, and some scenes from folding screens portraying an ideal life of a literati produced in and after the nineteenth century. Previous studies on this Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast focused mainly on its characteristics as a genre painting. As research findings on documentary paintings have accumulated recently, its significance as a visual documentation of the type of 60th wedding anniversary events popular among scholar-official households has been enhanced. This paper intends to concretely examine the actual circumstances of the production of paintings depicting a 60th wedding anniversary feast by exploring the context of the production and enjoyment of this Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast based on the existing research. It also proposes a production date for the Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast falling between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century by analyzing the visual elements of the painting album, such as the figures, spaces, and objects, and scrutinizing its style and expressive modes. Furthermore, this paper specifies the protagonist of the album by examining the records on the holding of 60th wedding anniversary feasts around the time of its production and those related to a walking stick with a dove-shaped handle held by the protagonist in the images. In addition, it explores the production background, objectives, and functions of this painting album. Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast documents in detail the procedures of this event across several scenes. It is significant for understanding the 60th wedding anniversary feast painting tradition since it appears to have been produced in the developmental stages of the 60th wedding anniversary feast painting tradition and suggests a prelude to the generalization of the style as part of the folding screens of an ideal life of a literati. This album conveys an amicable and intimate familial content and atmosphere. The scene of serving guests provides documentation of a modest event rather than the ostentatious moments. The clothing and behaviors of the figures are detailed and distinctive and offer a sense of realism. This paper verifies that these characteristics of the painting album are perceived as being contemporary and narrative and that they were shaped by the painter’s close observation and detailed descriptions. Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast was produced in order to document and preserve the history of a family. This objective can be understood in the context of paintings documenting the lives of scholar-official families. The production of such paintings on scholar-official families was encouraged by the expansion of family consciousness within the reorganization of the family order that followed the development of Neo-Confucianism in and after the mid-Joseon period. In this paper, I noted that 60th wedding anniversary feast paintings became popular during a period when paintings of banquets celebrating longevity and commemorating the conferment of royal gifts (a chair and staff), both events of a public nature, were no longer being actively produced. I also took into consideration the social perceptions and causes in order to understand the background for the emergence of the 60th wedding anniversary feast tradition, which was a happy private occasion for a family and had no precedent in Confucian ritual, as the subject for documentary paintings of scholar-official families. As the relationship between kings and their parents began to be emphasized at royal events in the late eighteenth century, the celebratory occasions of an individual came to be perceived as reflecting the well-being of the state. I argue that this shift enabled the emergence of the 60th wedding anniversary feast, which was established as a public banquet based on filial piety to celebrate one’s parents’ longevity and happy marriage, as the subject for documentary paintings of scholar-official families. Under these circumstances, Painting Album of a 60th Wedding Anniversary Feast was produced as a visual representation that vividly manifested a personal wish rather than a public cause. This painting album shows an aspect of true-view late-Joseon painting that applied a realistic style and frankly revealed both the outer appearances and the inner feelings of the subjects. Through these painterly characteristics, this paper has identified the status and meaning of the painting album as a work typical of the late Joseon.
