『論語』 克己復禮의 도덕교육적 含意에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Implications of Geuk-Gi-Bok-Rye in the Analects of Confucius for Moral Education)

초록

본 논문은 현대 우리 사회에 만연하고 있는 도덕 위기의 현주소를 살펴보고, 『논어』에 나타난 극기복례(克己復禮)의 의미와 내용 및 현대적 의의 고찰을 통해 극기복례의 정신이 현대 사회에 어떻게 활용할 수 있는가에 대한 연구이다. 전통적인 대가족 사회에서는 서당 교육을 통해 인간으로서 마땅히 지켜야 할 올바른 도리를 배우고 익혔으며, 가정에 돌아와서도 조부모를 비롯한 주변 어른들의 말과 행동을 보고 들으면서 자연스럽게 본심을 확충하고 본성을 회복하는 분위기 속에서 성장하였다. 그 결과 어릴 때부터 상대방과 대화를 나눌 때 경청하고 공손하게 답변을 하며, 주어진 상황에 맞게 올바른 행동을 할 수 있었다.
오늘날 청소년기의 도덕성 형성에 가장 많은 영향을 주는 요인으로는 학교와 대중 매체를 들 수 있다. 하지만 경쟁을 중시하는 학교에서는 도덕 교육이 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있으며, 마음을 열어놓고 대화할 수 있는 참된 친구를 찾기가 힘들게 되었다. 친구의 사귐도 경쟁 속에 이익을 다투는 관계로만 여기기 때문이다. 그 결과 친구의 좋은 일에 대해서도 겉으로는 축하를 보내지만 속으로는 시기하고 질투한다. 친구 또한 나에게 나쁜 일이 있으면 겉으로는 위로의 말을 건네지만, 속으로는 기뻐한다.
경쟁 속에서 이익을 중시하는 풍조는 대중 매체에서 시청률 경쟁과 광고 확보 경쟁으로 이어지고 있다. 그 결과 대중 매체는 올바른 볼거리 및 들을 거리 제공을 통해 교훈과 감동을 전해주고 대중들을 옳은 방향으로 인도하여 사회 발전에 이바지하기보다는 기업의 상품 광고 홍보를 통해 소비자들의 과소비와 사치를 조장하고, 막장 드라마로 시청률을 확보하며, 선정적인 춤과 노출을 통해 말초 신경을 자극하는 퇴폐적이고 외설적인 성 상품을 여과 장치 없이 홍보하는 등 흥행과 상업성을 추구하게 되었다. 도덕적 판단 능력이 미흡한 어린이나 청소년의 경우 TV나 인터넷, 스마트 폰 등을 통해 제공되는 기성세대의 각종 광고와 정보에 그대로 노출되어 눈과 귀를 통해 아무런 비판 없이 수용하고 모방하고 있다. 특히 기성세대를 모방한 청소년들의 언어폭력과 악성 댓글, 학교 폭력 등은 사회문제로 되고 있다.
이러한 문제를 근본적으로 해결하고 행복한 삶을 영위하기 위해서는 자기의 이기적 욕심을 이겨내고 본마음을 회복하려는 극기의 노력이 필요하다. 극기를 통해 본심이 이기적 욕심보다 마음속에 차지하는 비중이 커지게 되면, 내 마음과 남의 마음은 근본적으로 같다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 남과 한마음이 되면 힘들고 어려운 일은 자신이 먼저 하고, 쉽고 이익이 되는 일은 남에게 먼저 베풀기 때문에 원만한 인간관계를 형성할 수 있을 것이며, 더 나아가 올바르고 이상적인 사회 건설에도 이바지하게 될 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

This paper examines the current moral crisis prevailing in our modern society, and works on how the spirit of Geuk-Gi-Bok-Rye in the Analects of Confucius by reviewing its meaning, contents, and modern significance. In the traditional society with the extended family system, children learned and got acquainted with the correct duties that one should necessarily observe as a human being in Seodang education, and back home, they grew in the atmosphere in which they naturally made up their inside and restored their nature seeing and hearing words and behavior of surrounding adults including their grandparents. As a result, they were able to pay attention to others in listening to and responding to the latter politely, and to behavior themselves appropriately in given situations.
Currently, we can take schools and mass media as some of the factors that have the greatest influence on adolescents in forming morality. However, moral education is not properly carried out in schools where competition is taken to be important, and adolescents have difficulty finding true friends with whom they can make conversations with open hearts. This is because they regard friendship as a relation in which they compete with friends for their profit. As a result, adolescents begrudge and envy their friends their good things while superficially celebrate them. Their friends, in turn, console them for their bad things superficially while being glad inside.
The trend in which people value profits in competition is associated with the netwar and competitions for advertisement obtainment among mass media. As a result, mass media encourage excessive consumption and extravagance in consumers through commercials, promote their view ratings with ‘Makjang (blind end)’soap operas, and pursue popularity and commercialism by showing unfiltered decadent and obscene sex products stimulating sensuality with lascivious dancing and undressing rather than giving lessons and emotion to people though correct things to see and listen to, and lead them in the correct direction to make contributions to social development. Exposed to various commercials and information provided by older generations through TV, Internet, smart phones etc., children and adolescents, who are not fully capable of moral judgment, accept and follow them without criticism. In particular, verbal violence, vicious cyber replies, and school violence mimicked by adolescents are now social problems.
In order to solve such problems radically and lead a happy life, you should win over your selfish desire and make self-denying efforts to restore the original mind. Once you have more of the original mind in your heart than selfish desires, you can realize that your mind and others’are the same in nature. As you outdo others in addressing painful and difficult jobs and give in easy and profitable things to others if you are united with others in spirit, you can make harmonious interpersonal relations and furthermore, are expected to make contributions to building a correct and ideal society.
